How can I embrace the positive when I have zero BE pets?

I am not dumping my babies that have been with me for over five months simply because they can only half-fix a problem. If I was willing to do that, I might as well give up being a Creature Handler. My love for my existing pets is the only reason I have not dropped this profession (and probably the game).

Being both BE and CH, I was thrilled ot read that last night there was a new skill added to be tought - Ranged Toggle for BE pets (or something like that...)! I immidiately taught it to my level 43 Gurrcat with massive resists and strong poison and intimidate with ranged attack (made it myself) and sure enough, when I sent him in against a Grassland Voritor, along with another cat I made that I did not train with the new skill, he stayed back about 20m or so and I was able to command both special ast will while he never got touched in the fight... Truly AMAZING. I liked their ability to hit with specials before, but this provided backup fo any other crittters that might spawn up. This is the first CH change I have liked in 6 months... It is nice to have something that actually makes it MORE fun to play instead of less... Way to go DEVS! Lets see more of this type of thing... (Adding instead of taking away I mean...)

are ranged attacks really all that great though? ive seen my pets attack with ranged a few times (they did it on their own accord) and ive been attacked by pets that do ranged, and all i seem to notice is when they used ranged they miss like 80% of the time :/ correct me if im wrong...

I can not speak for your experiences of course, but my petsdid the ranged attack thing from time to time too. This is very different, because I am in control of it (can turn it on and off as desired/if needed), and it is a great tool to have in my arsenal. I was able to keep10-11k HAM voritors stunned, blind, intimidated and, bleeding untilthey died repeatedly by carfully using my gun and my 2 pets as needed to reapply the specials as they faded. Amazing! Try it, really - go try... =)

I thought ranged attacks didn't work for BE pets in skins which normally wouldn't have a ranged? Maybe I should test this out on some trash.

UncleJay, tell your pets to follow the target first, then to attack once they are on top of them. That way you can tell them to initiate the attack with specials and they remain in melee range. I never use ranged, it just brings the mob to me, as you say, which totally defeats the object of hunting with my pets.

Arm, they supposedly fixed both teaching ranged and using the command for BE pets.

The problem I assume is happening is that they will kite regardless of how close the other creature tries to get. If it was working as intended (I hear droids do this), you could toggle ranged attacks off and the pet would enter melee. So the system has changed from what we were familiar with pre-Publish 6, where the pet chooses melee or ranged based on distance.

[This is speculation since I have neither a droid nor a BE pet to try out. It is my understanding of things after reading dev notes and player's comments, but I could be wrong on some points.]

Ive had my pair of CL 35 BE Gurreks for about 2months and they have always used there ranged attack. I have even seen there specials hit with the ranged attack ie: mob gets KDed or Poisoned as soon as i tell pet to attack and the mob is 25+ meters away and the text said Gurrek shoots at a... This is all fine and good but why doesnt theranged command actualy toggle ranged attack on or off? No matter how many times i give the command it always says "ranged attack is ON".

I could add the followtarget command into my attack macro, but then i would have to put a 5 or 10 second pausebeforethe attack command so the pet had time to get to the mob. Then what happens when i need it to change targets fast to get a mob off of someone and my pet is following for several seconds before it attacks?

I have also noticed that if a mob is on me my pets refuse to come into melee range to get it off. They just sit back and happily shoot away while I tank the mob for them, which is sort of the opposite of what i had in mind for them.... I end up having to run the mobthroughmy petsto "scrape" it off.

Why cant they just fix the stupid ranged commandso that it actualy "toggles"? LOL thats like having alight switch that is on no matter whichway you flip it. Hehe. not much of a toggle if you ask me.

I'm half tempted to have my BE make me a new pair that specificaly does not have a ranged attack.

Also, what ever happened to them fixing the pets standing on top of each other thing? My gurrecks like to stand inside of each other so that cant target the one i need to heal.

Actually, I was using my BE squall on a Mokk encampment last night and I did get the "A squall shoots at a Mokk soothsayer encampment for xxx damage" last night, so it seems it was using its ranged attack, which I hadn't noticed before.
