Thread: Non-Combat CH Ideas Long, Naturally

Combat is the lifeblood of the game, as we are all aware. When we aren't trying to get bugs fixed, we are trying to become more effective in combat. This is, of course, admirable from a game point, but to a limited degree.

It seems that there is a strong hatred for the CH in the game, which makes most of us a little more vocal than we might normally be, because if we aren't, we won't get what we are looking for. For some reason, everyone and their brother thinks that the CH is a coward, or a gimp, or the hated P word. Knowing that, I would like to re-visit an old idea - making the CH effective from a non-combat arena.

I do this knowing that it probably will not be put in front of anyone in the near future, but because this is something that I, personally, believe in. Vert already has his hands full with the combat related stuff. This is just to see if there are others out there, that believe as I do, that we can be so much more than what we are, without nerfing other professions.

Ideas:

Please note: In the name of balance, these training types would have to be done INSTEAD of the training that we normally do on critters. So if a critter is trained in a specialty, it cannot be trained for combat.

1) "Truffle Pigs" - On this side of the keyboard, pigs get truffles for fine restaurants. If there were a way to train the roba's so that they could forage interesting additives that chefs could use to enhance their foods, then we, the CH's could sell the trained critters to the Chefs. This would give us another market for doing what we do best - taming and training critters.

2) "Circus Acts" - Special training for small critters such as birds, squalls, and (maybe) kima's. Circus training would consist of 6-12 tricks that the critter could do. Entertainers might be encouraged to actually stay at the keyboard if they were controlling their critters, and non-entertainers would appreciate a little variety from the dance-bots that populate so many cantinas.

3) "Bloodhounds" - If you sacrifice a small sample of what you are looking for, then it will lead you to the nearest source of that resource - provided that the resource would have some sort of scent (meat/hide/bone). This would be effective, but not as effective as having a Ranger in the group, since it would literally lead you to the first source of that resource out there, regardless of size or ferocity. So, if you wanted Dath leather, you would do better to use a Ranger to find Brackasets, since thebloodhound would lead you straight to a Rancor lair (which would probably be someone's mission anyway).

4) Rescue animals - The entire purpose of the rescue animal is to pull a body (corpse or incapped)back to the owner. This would be a wonderful help to Docs, naturally, but could add to some interesting RP, if factions are dragging opposite faction members to them to DB them. It can work both ways, after all.

The re-work of the code doesn't have to be too difficult for any of these, possibly. I can only code in VB, so I'm not an authority, definitely, but it would seem that an adjusted version of Seeker Droid code could be used for the Bloodhound. Incorporating some of the animations that are already there could be used for the tricks the Circus Act might need. Also, some variant (resource specific) might be used for the "Truffle Pigs". But, I don't know.

Alright guys. This is my own personal "quest" within the game - to get our critters more useful in situations that aren't necessarily combat. Thoughts? Ideas? Flames?

Thanks guys.

This all stems from my feelings that grouping is not the same as interaction and interdependence. Grouping is great to get higher XP or bring down high level stuff, but there should be more interaction between the CH community and the non-CH community.

Anyone got any ideas that would help more non-combat roles?

artisan sampling: train a non-ch animal to dig in the ground, boosting survey sample amounts temporarily, i.e. instead of 12 units of metal, you sample 24 units the next three successful samples, but you must feed the pet after it to replenish its energy.

additional item storage: simply allows the player to store extra items in the sacks and pouches that are on the creature mount graphic, but encumbrancing the creature like armor does on players.

allowing specials to be used while mounted in combat: allow specially trained combat pets to help you fight while mounted, allowing the use of special attack moves from a given combat prof, but at a higher ham cost to compensate for the added bonus of moving in combat.

animal pens and holding cells: allow CH's to craft special areas to hold called animals, (like calling three out, placing them in a corral, and allow the user to call three more animals, for organizational reasons and a cool looking graphic) the corraled animals could not be able to attack. maybe a CH could consent chefs or scouts to milk animals while they are corraled, boosting milk harvesting. maybe allow some animals to be shaved for furs in tailor crafting (think of sheep sheering for wool)

i can probably think of more, please pass these onto the CH forums and keep these from descending into message board oblivion!

My first post ever... just to say that this is the best line of thought I've seen on these Forums. There is so much room here to make CH more than just another angle on combat. I'm in CH just to collect the animals; the fact that they can keep enemies busy while I work on their buddies is bonus. Pack animals, locating special resources, rescue duties... I love it. Maybe somewhere down the road if we keep this idea popping up once in awhile.

Godspeed in your efforts, see you in the wild,

May I be the 1st congrats on yer first post!!!

I REALLY like the rescue idea. Kudos on that. We have been asking for a pack animal for ages now. Its need so bad. I think the only problem is a master ch could hold 1000s of items if all he had was pack animals. So a master artisan/master ch might have an advantage in some way. The rescue idea really rocks tho
