Thread: How viable is Creature Handler as a character's sole melee profession?

My master entertainer/master musician has been working towards pistoleer with his spare skill points. The combat game is reasonably boring, however, and I've quickly been learning that even if I master pistoleer or get close to it that my CL is still going to be too low to do any kind of serious hunting when I feel like it.

Meanwhile, the new creature handling system looks like it has a lot of the features that I really enjoyed as a Hunter in WoW.

Now, if I believe the Allakhazam template builder, I can keep ME and MM and still reach Master Creature Handler. However, it will take all of my available skill points so I won't have any medic or weapon/melee skills. I'd be a CL1 depending entirely upon my pets to be my "weapons".

How viable is this? Since I'm already into pistoleer, it'd be a sort of "sine wave" where my pet's combat skills would theoretically be going up at the same rate as mine were going down (as I gave up pistoleer skill boxes), so the initial learning curve should be survivable. I'm not talking about soloing in CL80 areas or anything like that. I'm primarily an entertainer. This would be an interesting diversion, mainly. If I could be viable this way at CL 50-60 (which is what a pistoleer mastery would roughly give me) then I'd be satisfied. Since I'm an old-fogey, I've got a non-CL ADK'd Republic Blaster with a max damage of 750 or thereabouts, so even at CL1 I'd be able to help out my pets in combat a little bit.

What do you think?

Well as long as you don't plan on doing missions all the time then I think you would enjoy it.And you can always burst run away from something and use your pets to cover for you.

I think this is entirely viable if you stick to enemies in the CL 50-60 range. It will take longer to kill your enemies than your Master -insert weapon-, but it should be fun. After training your pets, you'll have all the states you need so no worries there.

The only problem with not being a CL 70+ (MCH plus a combat prof) is training those high level beasts on Dathomir, Endor, and Yavin IV. As a CL 60ish or so, you may be going to the cloner several times before you are able to tame that Bull Rancor or Ancient Reptilian Flyer. But if you simply want the cats and snakes your good to go. Your even good to go against the level 50 Rancors if your careful.

If you decide to go with CH and would like higher level pets but can't get em I would be willing to tame ya a few, no charge. If you are on Eclipse of course. =)

It's implied but some of the posts above, however CH does give you combat levels. You will be CL 54 as a master.

Ungrouped you can have pets up to CL 70. Grouped they take your level for better or worse, although a CL 70 critter fighting at 54 is still stronger than other 50's.

For taming the high level pets, I recommend grouping with a high CL character to make life easier.

Not quite true - CH counts as an elite combat skill, so you would be CL 54 at MCH.

At that CL you can still wield "titleless" CL 54 weapons which can dish out a tidy bit of damage (I used a dam 400-750 ish Carbine before respecing from MBE to MCM), even with no weapons ability you can equal your pets damage output and should be able to handle up to CL 60 without too much pain (although you will need to learn how to pull single mobs!). Even CL 80 mobs are doable - but take a long time and a LOT of pet stims!

CL is now critical, especially on Dath (as someone ponted out earlier). I was able to get away with it due to Master Scout (maskscent) - but you are likely to be pushed to get the higher level pets without getting CL above 54 (BE pets are definitely a good buy here!).

Hope this helps!

Ah, if Creature Handler comes with it's own combat rating then I don't see any problem beyond having to drop Medic. I can live with that. Just have to make sure I carry a crate of stims around. *heh*

Thanks for the info, folks!

My Crafter ALT has MCH as his only combat proff and it works great. He is perfectly cappible of takeing down CL70's range MOB's and can tame dath critters just fine.

The Advanced laser rifle is CL54 gun with no cert required, so he can use that. Since he dosnt have any combat specials with a gun I had my favorite WS make one with good Base DPS (401) and didn't need to worry about SAC at all (SAC 135). That and some good pets he can Quest and hunt with groups, or solo just fine.

As far as tameing on Dath, it's not realy harder than my other MCH's just takes a bit more patience. He uses BE clothes and Cammo kits instead of Armor, and just avoids everything he is not looking to tame.Works just fine.

Biggest thing to remeber is when fighting the higher end MOB's you can't group with your CL 60-70 pets. With just MCH your CL54 and will end up dropping your high end critters down to your CL. This does tend to make some of the bodies un-lootable/Harvestable. Other than that it's great for a crafter/entertainer.

My MCH is also a MRanger, so I know the problems of not having any defense or offense ability. Although I am CL80, I rely on my pets almost exclusively and then add in damage with a CL54 pistol, carbine, or rifle and have no trouble with killing non-elites several levels higher than me. Your problem will only come in with your CL vs creatures in the later game, but a good BE'd CL70 pet with aggression ability can go a long way to making you viable for most content under CL73ish and up to CL80 with some practice.
