My prognosis of them is that they are really not all that rare. Maybe semi-rare at best. The reason for this? I got three babies out of a single lair (tamed two, accidently killed one with FanShot). The babies themselves don't seem to be rare at all, it's just kind of tough to find the species in general since they only spawn in a few areas (from what I've seen).

The babies are not rare, but the spawns of the critters to begin with are not common. This is true with a number of other critters, such as forest slice hounds on Corellia. You just don't see them that often.
