Thread: Pet mounts what is the point?

Being a CH and almost a master(been working on it casually since game release) I wonder what is the point of mounts. The day of release, I was all hyped about not having to walk all the time. Well, I went and paid a couple hundred thousand for a pet, and I tell you, I was unhappy. The look was cool, the idea was cool, but when I give the thing a giddyup, I thought I was walking. After a few days I concluded that pet normal movement was about 5-10% faster than walking. I figured, well, I guess that is some improvement.

Fast forward to vehicles. All of those are way faster than any mount. Because of this, I never see any mounts being used... EVER.

Arguements I have heard about mounts being better in some situations are not great enough to sacrafice 50% increasetravel speed for.

"Pets handle hills better" - They dont. Even with a speeder bike, I can climb a hill much faster.

"Pets do not require maintenance". That is true. But if the choice is...

spend an hour in mindless plodding across the planet to here and there and save 3k

-or-

spend 15 minutes mindless plodding across the planet and pay 3k

I will pay the money, and spend my time playing the game and not holding down an arrow key or pressing numlock and staring blankly at the screen.

With the simple fact being that I never see a mount in a game anymore, I wonder why the developers seem to think that adding 2 more "walking" speed transportation devices to the game.

If I am going a good distance, I will always go for my vehicle.

If I am surveying, I consider the mount good because it will follow me instead of me having to run back 100m after dismounting the vehicle to survey.

Why do you have to run back? Here is a little macro that makes survey easy with a vehicle... now this is not word for word, I am not sure if the syntax is totally correct, but you get the idea.

/dismount;

/pause 1;

/survey

/pause 1;

/mount;

Open your survey tool and have the resource you are looking for already selected. Also, make sure your vehicle is targeted. You can run your speedbike, stop, hit one button that surveys and places you back on the vehicle ready to move again. Absolutely no need to hop off your transportation and run around doing a survey.

Like Shaylin, for general transport I use a vehicle. When I'm out collecting DNA, the mount works better for a few reasons:

Spawns appear too slowly and you have to constantly stop the vehicle to see what develops

The mount doesn't get stuck and actually they don't seem to suffer from autostore problems as much. It's not much a tank, but it's better than having nothing out.

They need to increase the speed of mounts or at least open up the gallop over a longer distance to make them a bit more equal to vehicles, IMO.

I have to run back, because 9 times out of 10 (this is not an exageration) I warp 100m away from my vehicle/mount when I get off it.

And yes, I wait a few seconds after stopping before dismounting... have tried lots of things. It's the occations where I actually am still standing near enough to the vehicle to get back on it without moving that surprise me. heh

Now that would be a great idea!

I know that is not an exageration. I sometimes joke that there is a Jedi behind every rock force pushing me this way and that.

I have noticed though, that if I use the radial to dismount I get warped often. I found though, that if I use that macro, I never warp. Perhaps the on/off/on real quick sort of anchors me from being tossed 100 meters this way or that.

Why, for the love of Qui-Gon Ginn, is there any difference between the two?

Why should there be any difference in functionality between the two methods of dismounting?

Funny thing about the warp... I got Stuck because of LAG on Coronet once, in a corner fenced in just enough for me to move but NO exit. (BUG), but luckily again I get to use a BUG to get myself out of that BUG, I got on my speeder bike and started moving and dismounted and I was warped through the wall. Funny How One BUG fixes another. Kinda like when we were able to call a pet without a Camp (BUG) which compensated for all the times the Pets would autostore and stop at boundaries... They were able to FIX that bug though pretty quick the Call pets without a camp bug. Funny how SoE sets priorities on things. That is if they set priorities at all...

That was another 'feature' from the devs that was greatly improved on with the last patch. Before the patch I would never warp if I waited a couple seconds before dismounting. Now I'll warp even if I wait 30 sec. Also, before I'd only warp ahead of my vehicle. Now I'll warp ahead or behind it. Some of the warps will take me halfway across the map and then back again a second later. The devs seem to be more adept at screwing things up than fixing them.

I will give the macro a try and see if it helps GrandMuf! Thanks for the info... like Taz, I did not think there would be a difference in how ways of dismounting acted... silly us. lol

Bost... that's a funny story. Well in a sad kinda way. hehe I remember reading a post wherea poor guy on my server was travelling along and an npc camp spawned around him.... there was a cage in the camp that literally spawned around him and he was stuck in the cage for awhile.
