I see this posted quite a few times, and it's good to ask. But in the long run it is your playing style that will give you an answer. I just left Endor, not really hunting anything special, just knocking nests about. As it has been awhile since I really tamed anything and gave up tka to go rifleman, I figured this would be a good spot to just putter about. no mounts, no vehicles, no buffs, no armor, just a spot of the brandy in case I really thought about me running about this place in the buff so to speak.
Well to keep it short, I was mainly fighting screechers, battlelords and queens, see if any babies just happened to shake loose. I made 300k xp and was caped twice. These foes deathblow, I was capped. why?, my pets
where on it. They kept my non armored, non buffed self from the clone center. I did go through several pets because of the poison. None of them went below half health, I just stored and brought a fresh one out. Yes, my pets didn't do alot of damage, They did take damage at an alarming rate, but what we fought was dead and we walked away when it was over.
So draw your own conclusions, will they help in P vs p, not much. against p vs e, used right, they will keep you from visiting the clone center as often. It doesn't matter if you tame or buy be pets, running with your own pack is major fun.
Anyone need any pets on the eclipse server ? got a few good ones that need a home,no resalers please.

Depends on what you want to do... If you want to be PvP overgod... then no.
If you want it you sole combat Profession... no. Lets see to that after Combat Revamp.
Pets are fine for inflicting stateslike dizzy or KDor bleeds/poisons/diseases on command.
And with BE-Pets, they even tank, but not as sole combat profession.
If you want a funny, coo, exotic profession, most people look up to... yes.
I had a nice encounter yesterday with an ID,who never was out in the wilds, so
we talked half an hour, in roleplay about being "out there", (i had the Hunter title up,
so she asked, and in the end isold her a plumed Rasp for a token amount..a nice,
decorative bird.... itgave you that tringling feeling of fun.
