Ok,
I've been a MCH for quite a while now ...... but I still have no clue what Base-to-hit indicates
.
Can someone explain that to me ?

I've always assumed it means the same as it does for pen and paper RPGs, in which case it is the number used in comparison to the difficulty of the target for a hit roll (so it basically equates to accuracy, higher is better and it seems to be a percentage for SWG purposes).

my understanding it bth is the %age of hits per attack..if you had a gps that had a 2.oo attack speed and a .5 bth you would expect it to hit twice in 8 secs..lower attack speed is better and higher bth is better...i think .55bth is the highest for tameables, i have a be razor that is .62

and, of course, nobody cares, since pets are useless in dealing damage

Be that as it may, it's one of those things that's useful to know.
And heck, we might be held in slightly higher regard after the *cough* CR...

Pets would not be useless in dealing damage if some other combat professions were not horibbly overpowered at it. And I have no Combat skills at all and my pets can kill lvl 55/60 critters - though it does take them awhile.
