they will eat any food ... so be careful what foods you have in your inventory when you go to feed them .... chef's can make a bofa treet (among other foods that are for pets) .. that is pretty cheap and works for a nice feed for them ... there is also a roll that can add 1K HAM to your pets when they consume it ...

A pet will eat anything you can eat.
Pets will eat spice. Pets wll eat bivoli tempari. Pets will eat synthsteak.
A lot of merchants offer up crates of bofa treats as pet food. For healing wounds (when you get the (fido) hungry! spam) bofa treats or foraged foods will do; quality is of no importance in this case.
Be sure to keep your expensive buff foods OUT of your main inventory, preferably in a cargo pocket or satchel or (fido) will eat it if he can find it. The pet will eat the first edible in your inventory it can find, from top to bottom from left to right. Pets will eat spice, too, so watch out for that...leaving your muon gold in the inventory unprotected is a chance for (fluffy) to wolf it down.
There are special pet buff foods, like swessonberry rolls and blap biscuits that will buff up the action or health bars for a brief period. If the pet eats one of those the conventional way, the pet won't get the buff benefit, it will just heal the wounds. You must drag and drop these foods onto the pet to get the buff.

Nope, pets don't seem to respond to spice, whether you drag and drop it or let them eat it.
