I think I've read that you can set 3 patrol points - again, pet has to have patrol, get patrol point commands and might as well teach it clear patrol point as well. And, if you don't know, to have your pets guard you, use ctrl 1 then guard command.

Target another player then /tellpet guard. You're pet will guard the player. If an animal aggros on that player your pet(s) will automatically attack. You can tell your pets to guard yourself as well.

Patrol works well if you want to sell an animal or you can use it for advertising. Name your animal For-sale and make it patrol a well traveled area. I used to sell mounts in Anchorhead that way. I'd sit at the shuttleport and spam a few times while my animal patrolled the square. It worked well.

For patrol all you need to do is walk to a spot, and give your pet the command he knows for "get patrol point".... walk to another spot a bit away and do it again.... I am not sure if there is a limit on how many points you can set, but once you have a route set up with several points, give the pet the command he knows for patrol and he will walk the route.

Well, the 3 patrol points is not right. I use 4 all the time to get my 3 Ancient Reptilian Flyers flapping around my medium Naboo house.

Be careful if you use the guard command on yourself and you're trying to tame or sample DNA. If your subject aggros on you then your pet will attack it and the babies don't last long.

I frequently hunt with 2 pets. At times I set the weaker pet to guard the stronger. This way the stronger pet usually holds the aggro, but both pets are on the same target with one command.

FYI - once you have set a pet to guard, it seems to require a store and recall to "clear" his memory of that command.

I also use two pets but of the same level (currently 2 GSPs). I always set PET_A to guard PET_B and PET_B to guard PET_A. That way they always back each other up and you don't have to worry about one pet standing around while the other gets beat on.

You can retarget the object to be guarded, without storing and recalling. When I was an MCH, I'd have three 20something pets out, and have one of them guard me, another guard whoever was on point, and the third guard a crucial team member, like the doc (gotta have those rezzes!) or another medic type, in case they picked up aggro. Going into combat, by itself, did not reset the guard command; the pet will continue to obey the last guard command it was given. The catch is that there is no indicator who or what the pet is currently assigned to guard, you must rely on your own memory, so the easiset method of resetting is to store and recall.

The pet will give you the floating "?" if it can't comprehend the command (for example, you don't retarget to a guardable object after using the bazaar or a factory) it will just ignore the command, and there's no way to tell without attention to the space around the pet what the current guard object is. If you're not paying attention, you can think you've set the pet to guard you, and when you get aggroed the pet just stands there and looks stupid while you're taking hits.
