Ok, been MCH for, well since the beginning from about month 3 or 4 of the game....so like many MCH, I also was not happy about having to grind Creature XP again.
So having got that off my chest, I finally went out last night and trained the first baby I came accross, a Gnort, so I had this little fella attack all his fellow Gnorts. Ha, ha, I just had to laugh at this, it was very amusing, I did get him to turn over his xp count 3 or 4 times though, no special abilities yet, but he sure went thru the xp fast.
Just sort of sad though, a MCH out hunting with a Gnort so I can train one of my real pets a skill, wonder what a Gnort can teach a Gaping Hunter Spider???

I know what you mean. The first thing that I got with an ability was a Flewt. It was kind of funny to see a Wookiee followed around by a Flewt.

You do realize that NOT all babies you tame will have a special ability? The pet you tame MUST have an ability already before you can learn it from that pet to teach to your other pets.

Highlight the Gnoret in your datapad and check the listed stats. If there is not a special ability listed then you are wasting your time trying to level him up as he will never gain a special and you will never learn a special from him.

When I first got him, he had no abilities, now it says he has a slot for 1. So,you are saying that I have to have one that already has a skill when I find him in order to train that skill???
Wow, that hurts then, oh well, more baby hunting tonight I guess.

You can only learn a pet skill from a baby that has one when you find it. Once you've learned that pet skill you can add it to any other pet that you've leveled up that has the requisite training point(s).

All pets gain "ability slots" as they gain xp. These are empty slots that you can then use to train abilities that you've learned. Some pets have an ability immediately after you tame them. If you do not already know that ability, using the pet for a period of time eventually allows you to learn the ability from your pet (which you can then teach to other pets with an empty slot).

Examining the pet control device in your datapad will show you whether the critter knows any abilities. Using the /train command with nothing targeted will bring up a list of abilities that you know.

While grinding a lanternbird and mature reptilian flier with a Bol hunting group, I noticed that just because a creature is high in level doesn't mean it'll take forever to raise. The lanternbird, CL30-something, was gaining around 2-2.5K per grouped kill. After I was done and learned Fleet Footed (L1) from him, I went on to my CL69 Mature Reptilian Flier and started training him. I noticed that the flier was gaining around 5-7K per grouped kill. I then stored and pulled out my CL10 Varactyl and noticed he was gaining 500 to 1K per kill.

In short, higher levels tend to gain much more XP per kill than a low level pet. I'm sure the grouped status has something to do with pet XP some how, but this was your average CL80 grinding group. After 2 1/2 lairs, my flier had over 100K XP. My numbers with the flier might not be accurate for 2 1/2 lairs because I accidently hit auto-target and told my flier to attack the lair and drawing aggro on me after the lair spawn dealt with my flier... I was incapped, but not dead, and revived myself and my flier and told him to attack another. Instead of coming to me when he was finished, he attacked the lair again and I was incapped again. Spammed him to follow me a few times in an attempt to potty-train him from this habbit, but telling him to attack the next bol caused him to go for the nest and the bol were pissed enough to make me a chew toy this time and finished me off.

This is probably related to an xp cap based on CL. I just started a new character yesterday and was grinding with a CL80 group on Dant, working on Rifle, unarmed and combat XP. Anyway, I noticed that when I was CL1 I was getting roughly 200 xp per kill on CL80ish MOBs. I still advanced pretty quickly, but I noticed after I got rifles 4 and a couple of boxes in Ranged support my CL was higher and my XP per kill increased. I then started on unarmed 1 as a CL 10 and was making about 1000 xp per kill. Using my MCH/MCM I get the full 5k or 6k of xp when killing CL80ish MOBs. So...

I think by using a CL10 pet the amount of XP they get is capped like it is with player CL regardless of the damage and CL of the MOB they attack (as long as the MOB CL is at a level to give max XP). This also explains the variance in XP gained between pets of different levels.
