Thread: Free Abilities?

Now are there really free abilities out there? Is it just the passive (untriggered) abilities that are free?

I have a CL21 mountain dewback that came with Defensive Agility (L1) (innate) on taming him. I also taught him Thick Skin (L1) (also innate & germane to dewbacks) learned from a littermate of his, and he still has 5 ability slots available in the datapad. The Guide to the New Pet System FAQ suggests that a CL21 critter only gets 5 training slots, but I'm counting 7 here. I also have a crimson razorcat (CL 24), not quite so grown as the dewback but has rolled xp a few (3?) times, that came with Bleed Attack (L1) (triggered), and that one still has 0 training slots available.

Does the FAQ need to be edited a bit more? Are all germane innate abilities free? Is it just a buggy dewback worth keeping? Is it just a lying, buggy datapad?

Pets that START with an innate ability, even triggered ones basically have an "extra" ability slot. That built in ability doenst count towards their training totals.

Has this been confirmed? Because my experience doesn't support this. Maybe I need to max more pets to see it more clearly.

Wouldn't surprise me if like everything else in this system, that the ability being free may be random.

I tried it on at least 2 pets that came with an innate ability and compared them to a pet that is the same species but no innate ability. They all have the same number of trainable slots and did let me train them to full.

Cut and pasted from the thread....

The following is TemporaryTrainable Ability Slotchart. More information still needs to be gathered, to insure its accuracy. If you find any entry to be inaccurate, please post it. This chart does not include any Ability Slots that the pet was tamed with, since tamed Abilites appear to be 'free'. It only lists the number of Slots that it will gain while being 'leveled' up.

Not enough information has been gathered on they system to make any 100% predictions on what a creature will have when fully trained. That is why more information needs to be gathered, and posted in that thread, so that we can narrow the correct information down. The two questions that you asked, in bold, are answered by the two line of bold from the guide.

It is possible that each CL of a pet has a certain range of Trainable Ability Slots, which would fit with some of the sporadic

As too why your Razorcat is Slotless is simple....

No two pets will gain Slots at the same time, all of the time. Pets gain Trainable Ability Slots at random maturity levels, but are inclined to produce a Trainable Ability Slot as their maturity level increases. Some pets will pop all of their slots in the first few maturity levels, some won't begin to appear until after 3-4 maturiy levels have been aquired. Some pets will earn a slot every other maturity level, some pets will earn 4+ in a row. This occurance seems to be as random as finding a pet that has an inherent Ability, but follows some guide lines.....

  • All Trainable Ability Slots should be aquired by the time it has hit the 10th Maturity Level.

  • High CL pets (CL 50+) should produce a Trainable Ability Slot with almost every maturity level.

  • After a pet reachs the 4th maturity level, it should have at least 1 Trainable Ability Slot

  • Petshould gain Trainable Ability Slots more regularly as it gains more Maturiy Levels, unlessit has already reached its maximum.

There are a lot of shoulds with this new system. From what I have seen about the core of this system would suggest that things are working correctly and as intended, unlike the functions of some of the Abilities.
