I am a noob also, but I think I know the answer. Kill lots of creatures, and use traps while killing them. Then you harvest the resources.
If there is a better way please let us noobs know.

You dont need trapping xp to get to CH.
You only need Scout XP...you get this from harvesting corpse or from using mask scent near aggro critters.
Scout XP is fairly quick to get. Just run around a city and kill/harvest everything you see. I got Novice CH is about 9 hours one Saturday, without any twinking.

while killin stuff around starter town will work its much faster if you can get into a group on an advanced planet. Vorator groups on dantoine or rancor groups on dathomir are good, even if your not realy able to do any dammage you can still harvest and get 400+ scouting XP per criter (sometimes much more) probably an hour or two tops particlarly if theres someone in the group to train you up in scout.

CH requires two lines of scout to be complete: exploration and hunting, both of which require scout XP to advance in.
If you intend to be a master scout or a ranger to compliment your CH skills, by all means, toss those traps and set up those tents.
Two ways to get scout XP: harvest creatures you or your groupkill, and successfully avoid being detected by aggro creatures using maskscent.

Get a friend. Get credits from friend. Go to dathomir. /shout "Looking for rancor group" /accept Get 2 enraged rancor missions to (direction) /harvest corpse of engraged rancor
You can get Scout Exp extremely fast, 1500exp per harvest (get Meat, so you can trade it for buffs later on) Lets just say if you spend a lot of time on it, you'll get it before bed time

Another way of getting scout exp quick (if you have a vehicle), is to goto an adventure planet (LOK or Dant seem to be easier), mask scent and haul butt in any direction. Passing the aggros will give you exp, and as long as you keep moving, you don't need to worry about dieing If something detects you, move to a location where there aren't any aggros around, and mask scent again. You can easily and safely get a ton of exp doing this... hope it helps

By new player do you mean novice scout looking to become a CH?
best way to get scouting exp is to harvest hides and bones of every animal you kill, then use a gen crafting tool to make camps and traps. then once you get to 4/0/4/0 you need to push on to CH.
**But be warned** due to recent changes to the profession it takes almost 4X longer to make it to master then it used to.
if your serious about becoming a CH and your on the Kettemoor server look me up I'll help you get some decent exp.
