some of the pet abilities are innate in the sense of always on, not triggered. it gets confusing because we're also using the word innate for abilities they're born with. sounds like your pet has the type of ability that's always on. you will be able to learn it just by fighting with him, that's all you have to do, fight with him and be patient, the timing of when you learn is random.

for the abilities that are triggered, theory is they might be learned faster if you do trigger them during fights, but i can vouch from experience that even those can be learned just by fighting, without triggering. i had a CL7 murra with self-sacrifice, and altho i wanted to learn the skill, i didn't want him getting incapped all the time taking hits for me *giggle*.
