Now that the new system is in place, I havent had a chance to learn it. I heard that old pets werent going to work with the new system, should I just release them and start over?

They can work in the new system. But you can only learnfrom new tames with innate abilities. Some are of the opinion that these innate abilities are free abilities that do not count towards the total a creature can learn; I am still not convinced.

No reason to release pets you are attached to or are still useful until you need the space.

Old pets are also seemingly getting one less trainable slot than others. If that is true, then new tames with a starting ability get two more slots.

A starting abeality takes up 1 training slot, so it's nothing special at (L1). However, pets with (L2) or (L2) have a noticeable advantage. Having a pet with Maring Storm (L3) as a starter skill is great, but not as good as a pet of the same level with Maring Storm (L1), (L2), AND (L3).

I think it evens out in the end.

According to numerous posts, starting abilities do not take up a slot. That is why pets with them are so much better than those without.
