Thread: MCH as combat profession viable now after CU?

I'm thinking of Master CH, Master Ranger, mainly because I enjoy the travelling aspects of the game. But I'm not sure if pets are to the point where they're good enough to serve as a primary combat profession.

Well, a pet can take on anything equal to its level or less with a good chance of success.

So, one CL 70 pet could match up against another CL 70 creature and have about 50/50 chance of being the one to survive because they should be equal. Resists would make a difference, as would special attacks, but those are currently broken and can't be seen so it's hard to judge an encounter before hand (until they fix this).

If you expect you'll be taking on small numbers of opponents weaker than your pet, it's fine as a primary combat profession, but expect your pet to take a punishment. For higher level opponents, you'll need something to go with CH. There's no way, for example, that a level 70 creature pet will win against a level 70 elite MOB. Nor will it beat a level 80 regular MOB without a tremendous amount of luck.

This is of course based on the current wild creatures we have available to us. The revised BE crafting in Publish 17 might allow us to exceed this level of combat with a wild pet, we don't have enough information yet. Old BE pets turned out pretty much junk in the conversion, so they're not even worth using most of the time.

Hope that helps a bit... CH is more viable IMO than it was pre-CU, but I'm not sure it would meet your criteria just yet without some of our top 5 list addressed.

Well, I'm just returing from a 9-month hiatus, and a *lot* has changed. I'm still a Master CH/Master Pikeman (I was quite pleased to find that Sony hadn't axed my old character), but I'mlost on this whole combat upgrade/respec thing. I'm still figuring it out

My personalgoal has always been Master Creature Handler/Master Ranger. I just dig the thought of travelling to the farthest parts of the most remote worlds, and I enjoy being able to do it by myself. Unfortunately, it appears that poor Rangers are still hosed (and the only profession left in the game that actually requires you to master a full novice profession before you can get into it, so it's even worse!), but when the day comes that they're fixed, I'd like to be able to use the pets as combatants - primarily in pve, but the occassional pvp, too (grouped, of course

At this point, it sounds like it's still an iffy proposition, so I'll try to augment it with something other than Ranger. Perhaps Rifleman or Carbineer is appropriate for an outdoorsman

I find Master Creature Handler/Master Rifleman to be quite enjoyable. You wouldn't be able to pick up any ranger though, but you could pick up a partial additional combat profession like 2 trees in Bounty Hunter for some more attacks, or Master Scout with 4 skill points left over.

Ranger badly needs some love though, I agree there.

Until the GCW revamp I would not expect too awful much from the ranger profession. God the GCW just is not as good as it used to be. Due to carebear semantics. Once rangers can seriously start working as hit and run artists again then that profession will be good. With the ambushes and speeding into bestine to mug the poor guys healing in the medcenter.
