to learn a L2 special do you have to have the L1 version first.

To learn it from a pet, no.


To teach it to a pet, yes. (Well, the pet needs to know the L1 ability.)

Unfortunately for a pet to actually learn a lvl 2 or 3 ability, you must first waste ability slots on the lower lvl abilities.

Unless they already know the lower level abilities when you tame em.
