Taking your pets out more during their growth seems to speed it up, as well as having your pets get into some combat situations. There never has been a true determination or study to prove this one way or another, but they do tend to grow faster if you use them. Lower level pets grow slower than higher level pets.

Pre-CU

Your pet could grow twice a day. How much depended on its lvl, Higherlevel pets had a bigger growth jump...

To have your pet gain two growth spurts you needed to login twice a day within the 12hour period that coorelated to the growth cycles. For example I am on the east coast usa. If I tamed a baby at 5pm tuesday then logged in at 6 am wednesday it would have grown. If I then logged out and returned that evening and played untill 10pm I would also see another growth cycle occured. although mu example ma be a little off its been generally discovered 12 hour intervals work.

If you only login once a day expect only one growth level, Not logging in at all for days stunts the growth alot although it may grow a little its not going to be much.

Logging in is the key, calling pets, feeding pets, using pets does not play a factor anymore, although once it was believed to help. The growth cycles respond to server time and player logins.

The new system being in place makes everything we new from the old to be suspect though. I haven't measured pet growth post cu yet, Hopefully it has remained the same.
