Thread: CH/rifleman.. anyone else having trouble with agro kiling you from 40m away>??
Yep, I've noticed the same thing. What I've found is if I tell my my 3 critters (I'm a MCH) to attack and I start attacking right away, I'm assured a 40 second time out. However, if I let my pets attack and wait a few seconds for them to do some damage and take a little bit of damage, I'm usually ok.
I don't know if it's supposed to be like that or if its lag or a bug.. but then we're all noobs again so who knows.
But as a CH, I know I have an advantage when it comes to soloing a spawn. Also, with the combat system so borked.. I couldn't kill a lvl.2 krevol (was hitting for 728dmg, but it wouldn't stop attacking) and I'm a lvl.71 rifleman! Only my GPS could save me from the devil bug!
I tried my alt who is a master CH/Master Rifles for the first post-CU hunt the other night.
Before CU my pets were trusty tanks who would keep the Mob occupied while I shot it to pieces.
Now... I send my pets after the Mob, they engage it but as soon as I got a shot off, the Mob immediately aggros me and charges over. Needless to say this is not good.
If my pets can't tank for me anymore, what is the point of keeping CH? Getting Master CH was the sole reason for creating and paying monthly fees for my second account. It took a loooong time to master and now it doesn't seem worth it.

I've been testing Swords/MCH because of what appeared to be a lack of viable tanking ability due to the hate system (and because I was already a MSwordsman). I wanted to have a template that would let me survive a close-encounter when (inevitably) a target switched to me, even though early on I thought I might respec to a ranged/MCH combo.
So far, my only experience testing the "send pet and wait" approach has been against krayts. I'm not sure if it's just because they spam area attacks or what, but as soon as I come into range and start attacking, I seem to become the primary target again, regardless of how long I let my pet nibble on him beforehand.
I suppose I should respec to rifleman/MCH to test out if that works better, but since I just have so much nice swordsman gear already, it seems like a waste ![]()
I have a better way and its working so far, I target, give pets follow command and wait until they are next to target then I use /tellpet kill for attack they engage I wait 5 secs then start shooting from 64m away
Well, I respec'd one of my toons to MR/MCH last night to try it out. I figured I'd choose krayts as my test subject as I've done them with my Swords/MCH fairly successfully, even if I ended up tanking it myself.
Krayt #1 : I sent my graul mauler in after it. They meet at about 30mfrom me. I wait a while, watching the graul's HAM drop. I hit the lowest level special I have (ranged shot), and guess what? Here comes Mr. Krayt. It was only lvl 78, so I was able to kill it, but barely.
Krayt #2: Send my graul after it while I stand back at the edge of rifle range. Oh, what's this? The krayt barrels past my graul, pausing just long enough to stun/blind/dizzy it, and then comes over and gobbles me up in a few bites (level 81 to my 80). I look over to what my graul is doing, and it's just standing back at the point of initial combat, looking dizzy. (bear in mind I never fired a single shot until the krayt was on top of me)
Any more suggestions? Causeranged/CH still doesn't work for me.

Im MR/MCH and grinding a bit of pistols right now, got to do it the hard way as I gave up novice medic to free the points.
Anyway, the best way Ive found so far of tanking and indeed getting xp is when I was hunting Gurks on Lok.
A group is best for xp but you can manage solo ok by using the same tactics I use with my Necro in EQ, with a bit of a workaround as we dont have the nice Necro DOT's that dont grab aggrosomuch.
Send in pets. I had best results with my three cats.
Wait a few seconds then hit the target with Startle Shot. This gives a few seconds when the target cant hit the pets with any damage and lets them wear him down a bit. I tried stopping shot and kneecap shot etc, but they dont appear to help that much with the pets, butStartle works a treat at keeping the pets alive that bit longer. Use Startle shot as often as you can get away with it, add the odd low damage shot. Experiment really. Watch the combat spam, to see how much damage the pets are putting out and how much you are doing.
Once the health of the target has dropped to around half. Hit him with Head Shot and everything else you can to cause maximum damage asap. You'l get charged of course but he's usually dead pretty quick.
I got great CH and Pistol xp doing this. Shame I don't need the CH xp really. In a group they were getting the same as my pistol xp, this week with the double xp it was about 5-6k each.
Solo, the more they tankanddamage thetarget the more CH xp and the less Combat xp you get.
Gurks are around the low 70's in level and give good xp for a level 80 Combat Character solo, I need to experiment to see what else works well when I have time.
QFE
If you are MCH/MR then exactly like what was stated here is best way to go when hunting solo.
It is of course much easier in a group but the same tactics apply.
