As all of us know, the new forum rating system has been implemented, to what appear positive reviews. Although I enjoy the new system, I had a question concerning the ranked portion of the forum ratings.
Now several people have complained that having their buddies 5* or bandits 1* them will compromise the integrity of the ranking system. The DEVS and REPS have responded with something along the lines of:
This will have a minimal impact because A) One star bandits are rare (which I would like to see hard data on this; such as proportion of posts with 1*) and B) Yes in the short run having your buddies 5* or enemies 1*you will serve it's purpose, but in the long wrong it will have less and less impact.
Now this is true, for as you increase the number of ratings given, each individual rating will have less impact as you are "dividing" by a larger number, but at NO time do extremeties such as 1* and 5* have any greater or less impact than any other rating. So in the end, yes it will impact your rating, and yes it will be on par with a "normal" or unbiased rating if someone 1* or 5*'s you a 100 times. That action will serve it's purpose (raising/lowering my forum rating).
Am I missing something here? In the end, I know its really of no consequence, I mean it's just a forum rating. But I feel some levels of confusion, and was wondering if I missed something obvious?

I think the rating system is well intentioned, and I think the new titles will help promote it with some people (others won't care), but I am not sure I agree with the forum developers/moderators on its ultimate effectiveness.
Over the past few weeks, I have been pretty vocal in this forum and started noticing that even some of my less controversial posts were getting one starred. While 1-star bandits don't really concern me, it did get me to thinking that it really depends on who is actually using the system.
The ranking system isn't easy to use. If you click on a rating, it immediately sends that to the server, reloads the page, and does *not* return you to where you were in the thread. Because of this, unless you're a really diligent person and try to rate every post you read, you are more apt to rate the posts you are most passionate about, something a friend has posted, etc. and not bother with the rest.
I think that while ratings and titles mean little to some people (which is fine), I think there would be a greater impact of it if it was easier to rate posts without disturbing your reading of the various messages in the thread.

peronally o dont bother rating any posts, and i never even checkl the ratings of posts (not even my own) the whole systems totally irrelevant to me (i tnd to read threads based on what the titel says so usualyl out of curiosity)
however for thsoe of you who are wodering aoubt tihs i do rember reading sometghing aoubt the new system thats relevant
on the subject of 1 star bandits
if someone is posting a lot of ratings of the same level (eg one staring a lot or 5 staring a lot) thier rating will have less effect (ie you get your weighting dropepd so you 1 stars worth less thna soemeon esles)

Personally I don't like the rating system. It encourages people to post what they think others want to hear, or what the "popular" frame of mind is at the time. If the one star bandits start toannoy you, I highly recommend disabling the rating system in your forum options. It's a very liberating experience.

I agree with Vert. The best thing I ever did was turning off the rating system. I had a one star stalker for a while and I just got tired of seeing that everytime I posted. Now people have to actually type something to irritate me.

Vex nice job on the X-Wing that is nuts!
I think that the Rating system is what you make of it... you can turn it off, you can use it to see if you are indeed the most popular or the most unpopular, it goes both ways, and if you don't care, then you don't care and you just don't get a cool gold bar in front of your name... nah nah nah nah.

I appreciate the comments on the rating system, and for the most part I think, as Vert stated, it encourages people to type what others want to hear, but I was kinda interested in my actual question:
Do extremeties count more or less towards your rating?
I know that 1* bandits are supposed to have less impact, but I'm not quite sure. I would be curious to see the model behind this, because I typically 5* posts that appear to have been struck by a bandit (like a post where it was just a question or not an opinionated statement but still 1*'d), and there is no evidence of a weighted system. After I correct a bandit, who has obviously just swept through a forum, the rating will still be 3 [(1 + 5)/2] after my correction.
Therefore, I'm very skeptical of any weighted system. Why can't they just divuldge the manner in which the new weighted system is calculated?

Maybe we could get a forum test center to check it out, I will be a 1 star nija... you can do only five stars, and then vert can do 3 stars... we will then after all have posted and stared equal amounts of posts, we can each do individual staring and see how it effects our ratings.

i think what the DEV's were trying to say is...
when you look at your dashboard you have an average rating and average message rated... i think they will weight the ratings on those numbers...
say someone rates 3000 posts at 1* (the 1* bandit) so his average message rated is a low number
then again you have someone who's rate 3000 posts 5*, average rating is a higher number
they will weigh those differently than someone who has just a few posts that they rate...
yes it might bump your rating up at first, but if they filter out these high and low bandits you'll come up with a closer to the actual average rating... plus its hard to get to 3.0 to 4.0 if you've had alot of your posts rated... its just a new game for the forum monkeys to play... it'll die down after a lil while...
i really don't care if my post gets rated, i disagree with the majority most of the time... but i very rarley get rated...
then again i rarely rate anything unless its a well writen post, or has some very valid points... and when i do get rated 1* or 5* (does anyone even use 2-4 stars???) i go back and think that i must have hit a nerve, or posted something very well...

I agree thats what they intended, and that I don't care about the rankings.
My point was there is no evidence of this.
And I just had a thought. After a while, people who have been on the boards a while, and have lots of posts in general, will naturally have tons of one stars. Do their posts become weighted? Even though they do not have a disproportionate amount of 1*, just a lot of them?
