Whoever is doing the most damage gets attacked. This means that you need one weapon that does more damage than your pet and one that does less. Use the low-powered weapon and your pet tanks for you. Use the high-powered one and you tank for your pet. You can easily trick the AI into attacking you when your health bar is full instead of finishing off your almost-dead pet, or vice-versa.

This is fun for about a hour.
