first I would keep your carbine. I would be dead over and over without some pistoleer. Second since they rearanged the tree, I would recomend going all the way up 2 trees and left over in third. As far as wich part look and see what you want to be able to train / control.
The only problem comes int he form of transfer. I am not sure if they are allowing pets to transfer that are tamed by non MCH above a certain lvl.
Otherwise it can be a very fun ride taming and finding that one pet you really like. Also you will probably want / get a BE pet for tanking until you can tame a higher lvl one for yourself.

as Aiseman said, take two full trees definitely. That will give you a CL of 36, plus a 1-1 in the remaining two gives you a CL of 40. That's really a good place for someone not going for master, IMO.
I'd include the training line as one of the 4's, and probably either empathy or mgmt. This way you can have the max number of pets for your level. Calling two pets (mgmt line) may be nice, but they can only add up to your max CL so it's not going to be a great combat advantage.
