Subject says it all.
I activated the ranged attack on a mite from Dath (forget the full name) and now when ever I take it out, it spits the red goo instead of charging the target

You can assign a command to ranged attack, and it acts like a switch (Area on/off). Not sure if it works properly though, but at least it exists. ![]()

It doesn't.
First use of command = Ranged attack ON
Second use of command = Ranged attack ON

I should do some tests about that - I only used it for switching ranged "on" once or twice, so I assumed I could switch it off with that too, makes no sense otherwise. But well, I'm just a little CH, what do I know about useful commands?

I've had this issue, too, where I tried to toggle the ranged attack off after it was turned on via the command I assigned to it. It always says "Ranged Attack turned ON" and won't toggle off.
I've heard that ranged attack pets just work like this (or at least do currently) and that they will choose to do ranged anyway if they're not within melee distance of their target. If you force the pet to get closer to its target, it will begin to fight melee again, but can't seem to turn it off manually ![]()

Ranged attack pets just work differently. When the situation is ideal for ranged they will use ranged when its not they use melee just like any other npc. You really do not suffer any penalty from the pet useing ranged over melee. In most cases its a blessing because the creature gets a couple spits in before the creature even gets close enough to touch it. Being able to toggle the attack on allows for a CH to basically ensure that the creature uses ranged attack over melee when they want.

Ya, that's what I had heard, and it makes sense

This just how ranged pets work.
The command used to toggle how things worked to a degree, even though it always says 'ON', but since at least the CU it has no effect whatsoever that I can discern. [I'm probably one of the sources Amethyst (pretty name btw) is talking about.]
If you want your pet to go into melee, tell it to follow the target then have it attack when it is close. This works most of the time.
If the target is a creature or melee type, have your pet attack and wait for a few hits. The target will close to melee and your pet will change to melee as well.
Personally, I prefer ranged pets over melee pets. They seem to function better, for my needs at least. If a target is kiting beyond melee range they continue attacking. They can draw attention from further away. When fighting at around 65 meters, they will engage a target another 30 meters away where a melee pet often won't.

Thanks
And I'm sure it was probably your wisdom that I remember reading this from recently
