I think it going to take an eternity to master this profession.
It stinks that I cannot even name my own pets at NCH... whos brillant idea was that??
Anyways it's not easy but I'll get there or switch to another profession.
There is also like nothing in the game that tells you what level pets you can 'control' and at what level. I have to come here instead.
I guess my lil level 10 critter is not going to help me whenI am in a combat group of level 80's... will it? It'll just die while fighting.

Open your skills window (CTRL+S). Under "My skill mods" you will find "Max level of pets"

Your pet will be fine. Chance is the enemy won't even noticeit, since the people
in the group will do a lot more damage than your pet.
I prefer to find a group of friends to hunt with, since some of the
"power-grinders" out there don't want to waste the extra couple of seconds
it takes to call/store my pet.

You might want to consider finding another handler, or getting Management I, to train the group command. Being able to group will boost its effectiveness a bit.
Don't let it attack first though and what Gandolforf said about being ignored should be true.

Look into the stickies for some advice, guidance etc
What they say in the previous replies counts. Better to hunt with groups, send yur pets in to attack. They will be outdamaged by the others anyway and wont get agroed and thus not killed.
Dont forget to talk to ya pets nicely every now and then or they'll wonder off

Take advantage of the double xp this week to get as far as you can. I've just about closed out CH as a result of the double xp - it's going so much faster. I've noticed that post CU training babies seems to be the way to go.

With 2x XP,training babies is the way to go if you can't find a high level group, especially at low levels. Gets boring as heck, but you get around 800-900 xp per command trained. At higher levels, you can earn 10k-12k per pet.
If you go to the river loop East and South East of Coronet, Corellia, you can easily find 30-50 babies over the course of an hour or two. Talus and Naboo also have some good places.
