Additionally, feeding the pet may straighten it out. Spiders can be commanded to do trick one where they spin around as well.

Ah, I'll have to try that. I usually keep my pets well-fed, so you'd have to intentionally leave some wounds on them to plan for this strategy.

Q: Which foods can pets eat?

A: Pets will eat anything a player can. This includes both crafted food (i.e. bofa treats, K-18 rations, etc) and foraged food (maroj melons, jars of foraged berries, etc). They won't consume drinks, fishing bait, or raw resources. You cannot feed a pet unless it has at least one point of Health or Action wounds, and you have actual food (not just food inside crates) in your inventory. Like players, you do not have to feed your pets for them to survive. But it does heal their wounds, and it also provides a good opportunity for roleplay.

Q: Will food buff my pets like it does players?

A: Starting in the Februrary 2004 publish, some "special" foods will buff a pet's statistics. These are crafted by Chefs, and will say "Species Restriction: Pet" in the Examine screen. You give the pet special food by dragging the food out of your inventory and dropping it on the pet (as you would give an item to an NPCin some quests). Using the "Feed" radial command does not buff, as that is still for normal wound-healing feedings. If a pet is stored and recalled, the buff will be cleared.

You can only give "special" buffing food to a particular pet once per hour. If you try to give it special food again sooner, you'll get a system message instructing you to either wait longer or store and recall the pet to clear the buff first.

Question: Can I leave my pet as a decoration in a building, or have it patrol my city when I'm offline?

Answer: No, with exceptions. You can buy a BE'd pet, and as long as you DON'T tame it, you can drop it in your house and it will just stand there. There's no way to "re-deed" a pet, or stuff and mount ol' Trigger after you've used him for a while. You cannot program a pet deed to walk around your house or patrol your property. You can, however, teach a pet to patrol an area, but you have to be online for this to work, because the pet disappears from the world shortly after you log off.

Vert, even if the pet doesn't have wounds, feeding it can straighten it out. It turns to you and says, "not hungry".

Q: My special attack and ranged attack command doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?
A:
The ranged attack command does not work. The special attack commands do work, but only if your pet is not in combat. The following macro is a work around:

/tellpet follow (Either follow target or follow you; Stay command also)
/pause 0.1 (Ensures other commands do not activate first)
/tellpet special1 (Tell the pet to use their special)
/pause 0.1
/tellpet attack (Re-engages your pet if they lack a special)
/echo Special One (Feedback; Can use color codes to make it stand out)

Map this to a key or place it in your hotbar and you can have your pet's specials fire almost every time. They may still be resisted, and some specials such as knockdown do not seem to work at all.

Ahhh, very useful, I am going to try that. Can I get some clarification though? I want a macro that will alternate S1 and S2 is that possible? Should that even be done or should my pets stick with a regular attack after attempting a special, assuming that doing dizzy/stun over and over does not stack...

You could alternate within the macro. If the pet is in combat, the special does not fire immediately, but rather on its next attack. That is up to two seconds for a wild pet and a variable amount for BE pets. Something like this should work most of the time:

...
/tellpet special1
/pause 2
/tellpet special2
...

Should that even be done or should my pets stick with a regular attack after attempting a special, assuming that doing dizzy/stun over and over does not stack...

Due to the delay and the fact that you might want one special to land before starting the other one, I would recommend separate macros. That way you are always calling the special you want when you want it.

I suppose it is possible the attacks are queued, but I have never tried. Since you can't cancel them, you might not want this anyways.

Most special attacks do regular damage, area attacks being the exception. You can continue to use them as many times as you like, so use specials or regular attacks as you prefer.

I'll try my hand at this with two questions and a semi-answer:

Q: My pet's full grown but still says on it's title it's a baby. What to do?

A: Name it.

Q: How can I tell what the specific special attacks of my creatures are? Do you have to be Master Scout?

A: I'm hoping someone can tell me...

A:
You need Ranger Tracking II to see special 1 and Tracking III to see special 2.

I think some one needs to put some info on best pets, this question seems to get asked frequently. I'm in no position to provide answers as it's been a while since I last went pet hunting to know what is currently good or not and indeed what spawns or not.
