Thread: Hey SOE, what do these specials really do? Where is the REAL info for this game?

While I don't agree with the tone of the original post, I agree that concrete information would be welcome. However, it doesn't seem to SOE's policy to give out such information. I don't know if it's because they don't want to hire the technical writers to present it or because they think it would "ruin" the game by giving detailed technical information (like "Tough Skin L1 increases the armor rating of the pet by 10%). I actually think it's the former because they seem willing to repost technical information gathered and written up by their users (e.g. in Friday Features, etc.).

If your refering to the fact that they should release info on what all the special attacks do and such.... they never have with anything else, and why should they. Its fun to find things for yourself, and if you don't like that then there are already posts here on the CH board that give great info.

I'd agree with this sentiment completely if I hadn't lived through the consequences of no info in another profession. See, they completely revamped Bio-E nearly two years ago. They told us nothing as to how that new system worked. We were left to figure it out on our own. We were even told that the beauty of the system was in the discovery.

Well that's great and all but how do we know if a newsystem is working if we have no information as to how the system is supposed to work? Not long after the BE patch went live some of us more industrious pet crafters started coming out with monstrocities that blew away anything in the wild. After a time these techniques were perfected. Enter the age of the uber pets. Was the system working? Again, it was the BE's that asked the question first. What did we receive as an answer? Silence.

How do you report bugs in a new system if you have no idea how that system is designed to work?

I really try to stay away from posting on these forums lately and instead try to read and learn so that i may enrich my own game experience. When I see someone attack a decent player here because of their LEGITIMATE concerns, however, it burns me up...Epsilon, if you don't see the same concerns as warwidow voice that opinion but do NOT attack someone you do not know just because you think you are clever enough. This is a major problem and isn't unique to the ch profession. Ch has now been brought in line with all the other profs in the game. The goal here seems now to be: lessen reward/earned outcomes and lengthen the time/effort it takes to achieve those outcomes. I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. Is anyone really thinking here? I totally understand warwidow's concern. As I opened my datapad to destroy my narglatches I realized that I had to clear more space to essentially start over on a profession I grinded not once but twice over a year and a half ago. But if I don't want to grind, I don't have to? That is correct. The specials my pets ALREADY had before CU will now be given back IF I wish to grind the profession with EVERY pet I use. The new sense of balance continues to flood through the game with a lack of concern by both the "creative" staff and the people who have been starved for attention in their profs for so long that even abuse is welcome.

This is much like the guy next door coming over and stealing the t.v. you bought with your hard-earned money (or rented maybe), then calling you to say you can come over and watch it if you mow his yard first.

Stop the name calling epsilon and if you don't have a clear adult opinion, shut up and grind...you should remember how to do it from the first time you leveled CH.

Let me get this straight; you think the first post in this thread was a legimate, rational post, designed to foster intelligent discussion among members of the CH community???

That post, amongmany others on these forums, had one purpose, to provoke an emotional response. It worked. The fact that you or he doesn't like the one it provoked, well that goes with the territory.

Iread and post in these forums to gain and share information about the game and profession. I don't like having to slog through post after post from a few dedicated trolls trying to hijack as many threads as they can and turn them into muck. I will do what I think I can, when I think I can, to try and lessen that.

That is my clear opinion. Adult or not? I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

i dont think the old specials would work because they did major changes to the gaming code. in fact we had to convert our existing pets over to generic stats just to keep using them in the game. i think they easily could have said everyone has to go get new pets now, but this way at least i can keep one or two favorites around and still use them for old times sake. with its generic stats, my lvl70 gurreck gets its butt kicked against a friends postCU lvl70 mite, and having specials would not turn the tide. we WANT to get new pets, and level them, so we will have the strongest pets we can pull.

theres no way thier going to make ch able to go toe to toe vs a lvl 80 fighter on its own. that would throw the game completely out of balance, because a ch is also using whatever other fighting profession they have trained, while the other fighter can only use one at a time i.e. rifle, carbine, etc.

unfortunately, our voice to get changes made in the future has been muddled by the juvenile rant of the original poster. 'grow a pair?' lol i bet this person wouldnt dare talk to the devs like that to thier face, why puff your chest out on a forum and insult the very people we will want to listen to us in the future?

i think the new ch system is very well thought out, and i only wish it had been this way at launch.

I like the new system, more specials, more customizability, if you see someone with a Rancor, it's not 100% sure that is has the same stats as your own. (with rancor just being an example )

Does no one enjoy the concept of *EXPLORING* a game anymore? This gives you the chance - yes, you personally - to be the first player to discover something new in the game and report it here if you want. How often does that come up.

I am sick and tired of players who don't want to find any mystery in a game. I am overjoyed that they are introducing something new to the game that is undocumented.

The problem with SWG exploring is when you find something, you never can tell if it's a "undocumented software feature", a "bug", or "working as intended"! If it's a bug, you never know if it's gonna be fixed in a reasonable amount of time in which case you ignore it, or if the bug is gonna be around forever in which case the player community must "explore" work-arounds! If the exploring is left up to the players, it would at least be nice to get a answer when something is found like is this something a bug or a new feature. Exploring to find things is fine, it's just the trying to figure out what it is you have found that's a bi*ch!

Furthermore, the developers have a well earned reputation for being very variable with their excuse du jour on what a situation is...a bug, or a feature, or working as intended. They've been known to say something is "working as intended" then it goes away a patch or two down the road.

The developers cannot be trusted to be honest in this regard. While ideally the path to Jedi should be a secret, the hard reality is that what is intended has to be documented because so many bugs come up along the way that it's impossible to tell what was originally intended in the first place.

The developers simply cannot be trusted in this regard.

It's just my personal view on the subject, but I like that it is so difficult. I believe this 'optional' grinding is what adds to the difficulty of truely calling yourself a 'master'.

The problem is that the grinding is not hard, its just boring and endless. Hard implies a challenge, there is nothing difficult about slaughtering lizards on Dantooine. While of course I have the option to do many other things - say slaughtering lizards on Tatooine instead - or slaughtering something else somewhere else there is a certain pattern established here. Leaving the difficulties of PvP aside, where quite a bit of challenge can be presented by fighting against other players (where the AI is often better at least), there is nothing particularly difficult anywhere in the game that I have seen. Now, I admit there is a lot I haven't seen still, so perhaps I am wrong, but most of this game seems designed to make it take a long time but thats about it. The potential is massive, but the execution is lacking somewhat.

Its like people saying its hard to become a Jedi. I see no evidence to support that so far. It merely takes a long time, but its not hard unless you include bearing up under extreme boredom as the chief challenge in creating your Jedi character - and thats not "hard", thats poor game design.

Now, SWG has a lot of things it does very well, albeit often buggily. The player driven economy and the crafting system are great examples to point to. The character design system is immensely flexible, the combat system is so-so and could benefit from studying the one used in City of Heroes but its at least vaguely functional. The actual in game play is my main beef. So far its keeping my interest but I am not sure I will stick with it because of the massive repetitive/boredom factor involved. They need more varied and challenging gameplay - and I admit I am at fault to some degree because I do not seek out the challenging gameplay that there is enough. I could be off trying to solo Krayts at CL36 I know
