Nah, those are too wire-haired. At least the pit is a smooth-hair, and that head shape is unmistakable.
June 9th
Logged in in a very good mood, because tonight I was supposed to go on a rancor hunt with Alvis, and I knew I'd get Novice Ranger, or at the very least have only a day or two of wilderness to go. These hunting trips can be huge, so that's a lot of people going through a camp. Unfortunately, it didn't happen, so I set off to dothe XPon my own. The night before I had logged with only 1000 more to go for Wilderness Survival III, so a couple of camps later I had that one and flew back to Entha to train. Then, back to the krayyt graveyard to look for wild dune boars and finish off Trapping IV. Pulled out Naiikin (I really need to replace him, or at least get something that's doesn't remind me every day that my grand wrix sucks,if I have to go with BE for the time being; maybe a bocatt) and headed out, checking my XP before I left . . . something like 1300 out of 15,000.
First decent spawn was a feral bantha lair, one of those beautiful ones that doesn't spawn the normal waves of five, but spawns more like waves of 20; I think this one had 45 animals total. That's a decent amount of trapping XP, and I had to camp twice to make myself more traps. Naiikin only AS'd once, but my speeder did twice, and I very rarely have any problem with my vehicle. Out from there we kept heading northeast, and just outside the city of Phoenix at the mouth of the krayyt graveyard we found a lair of rontos. I checked my XP . . . 2135. WTH, I'd just done a good 8-9k easy on the banthas! I thought back to someone who had posted here recently about his wierd CH XP cap, and realized I must have the same bug. To test it I sent Naiikin in on the rontos, and he took on the herd. Of course this brought him down to about 1/4 HAM, but I knew he'd be good for a little while longer because of course I could now get the lair to pop singles, and I just had to be careful.
Now, I'm a roleplayer through and through. Even my CH commands are all in Shyriiwook: "Wronn shuuk" means "follow them", "Hiipai urrth" is "do a trick", "grrhun" is "guard", for example. But it made for actually a rather funny circumstance at the lair. "Chorr" is my attack command, so I'd send in Naiikin with that command, and this happened:
Shabhaii: Chorr!
Naiikin: ROAR!
*Naiikin attacks a bull ronto*
Shabhaii: Chorr!
Naiikin: ROAR!
*Naiikin attacks a baby ronto to get it out of the way*
Shabhaii: Chorr!
Naiikin: ROAR!
*Naiikin attacks another ronto and is getting pretty low, okay, one more.*
Shabhaii: Chorr!
(from behind): MOO!
*Naiikin is nowhere to be found, and Shabhaii is running for her life from the three bull rontos and one female that suddenly spawned within 5 seconds of one another.*
A short dirt-nap later and I'm running again. Three times more that female ronto aggroed on me on her own; I'd be running hitting peace, she'd chase me, and when the combat music stopped I'd stop and try to get some HAM back. Two seconds later I was running from her again. The only other critter I've seen do that is the bolle bol, though I heard a friend say sharnaffs do too. Must be something with that type of animal that it holds a grudge.
I hide behind a building, watching for Psycho-Ronto on my radar, and check my skills again. Sure enough, still at 2135. So I head outside of town and set up a camp, and relog. When I get back in I have qualified for Trapping IV.
Now I'm rather stuck. Trapping IV was 15,000 XP that I got in an hour. Wilderness Survival IV is 20,000 XP with three ways of getting it: make stuff (ug, crafting grinding), camping (fun) and fishing (effort vs. XP not worth it). I decide to give the "fish and camp" meathod one more shot, since people here said they could do it and people at the fishing tournament also insisted that they had no problem. To top it off, my in-game fiancee Arrican had logged in and when I told him what I was going to do, he said the trick was to do it at a tiny puddle, and suggested Rori. He even said he would bring a couple of his characters out there to help with the camping XP.
I fly out to Narmle, and start looking for a small puddle. Plenty of rivers, but they all have steep banks and a lot of aggro NPC's. I fume to Arrican, and he says I should have tried around the Rebel Outpost. as soon as he said it I knew right where to go . . . that large swampy plain where the squalls swarm. It would be a pain, and I even joked to Arrican "Oh, you mean try the part of Rori where I die!" thanks to the occasional ravenous torton, but it could be done. I hop bike and go out there . . . and outside of Narmle there was not a single spawn. I don't mean they were thin, I mean there was NONE. I hadn't been on Rori since two days before player cities came out, and hadn't really spent a LOT of time there since I was probably a 2/2/2/2 CH in September or so. It had been crawling with all manner of critters then, perfect for a CH on the rise. Now, nothing.
I got to the plain, and still, no spawn. No little happy bunnies trying to rip out my throat, no tortons randomly spawning on top of me. It was depressing. But there were penty of very shallow puddles and I placed a camp. I actually placed five in various spots . . . the fish and camp meathod is done. The footprint is much too big no matter what you do. I tell Arrican not to bother, because its not working and I'm just going to fish. He's a little miffed because he travelled out there for nothing, I'm just as miffed for travelling out there for nothing when I had been saying for days "it doesn't work, believe me, I know building footprints, I placed enough of the damn things as Mayor to know what's going to fit and what isn't". No biggie though, dat's what wuv is all abowt. He said he would still join me, but had to go AFK for a few.
So I fish . . . trying out the Power-Fishing meathod. I'll say it works, and everyone should read it (it's stickied at the top of the scout forums and is probably the best written playguide I've read in a long time) if they haven't already, but the night had already started getting to me. There was nothing to watch, and I love animal watching. I was catching plenty of fish, but I actually think you sacrifice XP using the power meathod, because I was getting only 60-80 XP per fish rather than my usual 80-120. It was Rori, and it was dank, and murky, and I was up to my knees in swamp water all alone in the middle of nowhere. It was thoroughly depressing, so I decided to leave. I felt bad, because Arrican wasn't back yet, but it had been about 45 minutes and I wasn't going to sit on that mudhole any more. On the way into the Rebel Outpost I finally saw a lair: gualamas, with two dappled babies. These are some of my favorite animals in the game, thanks to the absence of gualaras (ever wonder what those "horses" are up on top of the Theed Arch? Now you know, they are gualaras, a cousin of the gualama) and I just can't wait until they are ridable. I'd hunted with a matched pair through a good deal of CH, but had to drop them from my pad long ago to make room. These were even the same colors as my old ones, yellow and orange, so I gladly replaced No'fayys and Haku since I no longer needed the pad space for sellable mounts.
Back to Theed. I just don't feel like fishing any more, so I set up a camp and start making practice traps for some XP, musing about how stupid the Wilderness Survival line is. All it gets you is foraging bonuses and camping bonuses, and camps are useless and foraging pointless. It's probably the single most time consuming line to get if you don't have a group of people who want to do nothing but literally sit for a night, and no one takes it unless they want the Master Scout or Master Ranger tag. I start thinking about a proposal to take pet stims away from BE's (they supply enough people with expensive, necessary goods anyways, and coming from an ex-BE they can stand to loose a little bit of their business) and moving them to Scout and Ranger, replacing Line IV with Wilderness Medicine. I look up and realize I slid out of my camp, probably a while ago, because its gone. Arrican still isn't back, so I log out.
