I have named at least 8 of those critters. Sounds like you might be bugged.

i had no probs with naming even long names as long as there are no spaces or special chars in the name.

i use the /tellpet command for naming. usually by just repeating the same commad like "/tellpet hugo xxx" for 4 different commands, as i return to the short form commands afterwards anyway.

do u use tellpet or do u just say it loud in chat? - perhaps its the tellpet-command.
... or they changed things in a recent patch - i only used short names for my pets lately.

I saw a person name one Blah-Blah-Blah (can't remember the name) I could see them doing the name so it wasn't tell pet. I wondered if there was a difference from an old MCH and a new one. Since I sure cannot do that. Or if there were some kind of CA.

perhaps u used some kind of name that was not appropriate. there are several names or even part of names (like ...master... in any form) which cannot be used in names (player and pet's names). u wont get an error message - just the pet's name wont change.
