Thread: Varactyl Questions (post CU and new CH changes)
First varactyls come in two forms, CL10 or CL65. They won't change CL no matter what skill level you are. You do need to bea master to both tame and call the CL65.
There was a bug that if you traded a pet, the pet would no longer gain exp, even if traded to another CH. That may be by design. Non CHs don't gain exp with their pet. That being said you may want to get novice CH just to level up your varactyl. You can then teach a few basic commands. After you have your 4 abillity slots open and a lot of ability points (some skills take as many as 15, so plan on 60-100) take it to a CH that knows the skills you would like your pet to have. Have the CH fully train your pet with all the commands and specials.
It can then be transferred back to you. Some CHes will do it for free, other will charge you. Those specials are valuable however, takes a lot of work to get them, so expect to pay a fee. Your pet will retain all commands and specials and you can use them, even after dropping CH.
Exactly how good that CL10 will do in combat is anyones guess. You have a support template as is, that should work great in a group and at long range. Mobility is good for that, unfortunetly you can't fire while on a mount. You can use it to get yourself to a place to take cover though. You may want to rethink BH and look at some medic type skills, like CM. This way you can heal yourself, your pet and group members if need be.
If you take up CH and then drop it, the highest you can call will be CL10. Even if you have a CL65 in your data pad, you will not be able to call it without being a master CH. It will stay in your data pad, doing nothing. I could see one going up to master CH, getting a whole bunch of CL10 pets and then dropping CH, just to have a lot of pets. Otherwise anything over CL10 is a waste of datapad space.
Your CL 10 varactyl will never be more than CL10. What you can do is make it the best CL10 it can be. This means having it 'leveled', for lack of a better word, so it has its 4 pet ability slots and a bunch of taming points. It can then be taught 4 specials then and be as good as a CL10 can be.
If you really really want a great pet, you have to go Master CH or at least have some CH in there. You could go 0044 or something and control a CL36 pet. Master CH/Master SL with some healer would be a doable template. You'll never win in a duel, but you'll make any group you are in more effective.
Healer is up to you really. If you are always grouping with people that have healer and they are good at healing (just having healer in your template doesn't mean you are good at healing others) then you probably don't need healer. CHes tend to be more solo type players, mostly because others won't wait for a pet, so having healing to heal your pets is needed. Either way having a bit of healer, even if you don't get past medic, is a good thing.
You may just want to have your CL10 varactyl be the best CL10 it can be and leave it at that.
Great, thanks for the tips! Looks like I'll just go Novice CH or maybe some trees to graft some pet commands and have 4 abilities taught to it such as pet speed enchantment for running and any non-combat related cuz lvl 10 can't fight against lvl 80 mobs good anyway so good investment is to boost its speed to help me to travel faster and maybe increase its health to sustain some hits during my travel or something like that. Once do that then drop Novice CH and my lvl 10 Varactyl would be enchanted than the basic lvl 10 one.. Yeah, I don't care about any other creatures and not worth having many other lvl 10 ones. ![]()
I'm curious about blinding, stun, snare mob. Will the special attack success depends on pet's level vs mob's level? If true then guess that lvl 10 won't help much against 80. If level doesn't matter for special attacks then it can be worthwhile to teach it as support.
State effects currently don't do much. The big one I see everyone wanting, beyond fleet footed that is, is imperialing feint. Sounds like armor break to me, which most people don't have. Probably not useful unless it is L3, which means no L3 fleet footed.
Now you do get 2 pet slots plus 2 more for novice CH. You could then have 4 CL10s to choose from with different set ups. As to how good a CL10 can hit and stick a special, that is anyones guess at this point. Sure that will come out in the next few days.
Ah nice. Good to know that pet can retain commands etc if I demote myself.. It made me think maybe I should hit MCH just to get lvl 65 version and train it all way up and max it out and make it mountable at lvl 65 and learn all pet special attacks it can have etc then I demote myself out of CH and become Master Squad leader. Is it doable? I only wanted best Varactyl I wanted even lvl 10 but made me tempted for 65 version (even more hell to level up)..
You said that I could level lvl 10 up? Then why need to get egg to grow lvl 65 one if I simply can level my original one up to 65?
Being squad leader, I heard that some of group benefit of Squad leader wont affect pet abilities. Is it changed with new CU/CH system? I saw the skillbox (creature management I) saying that I can learn to invite pet into group then I assume that it can enjoy group benefits and helps me to level up as squadleader as a support with my other players with pet in group as well.
Also, I saw that once I am novice CH, I can store up to 4 pets. If I lose NCH, my stored pet would drop to 1? Is that true or still stuck at 4? Was just thinking of taking advantage of it and buy more pets til max out before demote myself.
Yeah, I was evaluating CM instead of BH but it cost to open up medic for 15 skill point and cost 1 tree of 14 skill points to open up novice CM and enjoy ranged healing. Having BH already have scout opened thanks to SL that saves 15 skill point.. I was just going to strengthen my rifle power via 0004 BH and shoot from distance and oversee the battlefield while shooting and make decisions on fly. I was hoping to have lvl 65 Varactyl to act as my body meat as I shoot behind it if its possible.
Til SOE finally decide to make mount shooting possible once again then I would be able to rely on lvl 65 to sustain some damage and won't die on me while I shoot on it. I was going to have doctor in my party as regular hunting. However CM sounds tempting tho cuz can heal my lvl 65 pet while I shoot to support my pet tanking. Hmm. Plus a benefit to heal players in my group as well. Hmm..
