It's ironic, I sense you post that with some sarcasm and bitterness, which I can understand the way things are shaping up right now on TC. But spare some food for thought for those CH's that DO only use pets as a matter of choice likea goodly number of MCH / Master Rangers I know (including me). I have ZERO weapon skills over and above whats given at MCH or M Ranger and the rest of what points I have left are in Medic (Organic Chemistry) and B E (Tissues I - III).
I have fought for over a year using pets and traps alone and I have managed just peachy thank you very much. Sure, I am worried about what the CU is going to do to my gaming just as much as you are and with good reason. I just hope that when it all comes down to it and this goes live, you CHOOSE to be a CH/SL/Ranger not because you are taking the pi$$, but because it might actually be viable and fun.
That wasn't a dig by the way, I just thought it was interesting you chose that combination to emphasise your point (which was quite correct BTW unfortunately and has me very concerned... especially the hate systemvs traps or stims)
Stay peachy - Iena: Ahazi MCH / Master Ranger
edit: "I have fought small and medium level creatures for over a year using pets and traps alone".
Manyof us have been creature handlers longer than that and use it differently, respect that as well. Some of us have taken the time to learn the intricacies of the profession as well andchoose to fight higher lefvel mobs:
I myself have worked around teh inadaquecies of CH and mastered the profession for real, I believe. Not just the master box, but mastered by using what I have to the best of my abilities.
He is right about support, you flamed it, and then you said he was right. What is your point? For many of us, our pets have always been support and never primary damage dealers.

That is an interesting idea I too have been struggling with the issue, if my pets are tanks I need to do less damage or I'll be the tank and damage dealer. What will my pets do? I have thought about dabbling in SL with the trees that might benefit the creatures but have been unable to confirm much of this. I have also seen a few guns certs for just squad leader but have not checked them out yet but I will now
Another Idea I had was to pick up Combat med. I have done a little testing on TC and found that I was not out damaging the pet in a way that made me the target, lol. I have new hope that I can find something that works and I do not have to tear out my heart and lose my pets because it no longer works.

There are some posts about this on the SL forums I think. It is alot like our specials, only a coupl of them work for pets and even then it is not much help.
If you want I will run through the professions you want to look at and tell you what CL they will come out at. In a group the CL wont matter unless you are the highest, but it also determines your hit points(I no longer call it health, they want to make it dungeons and dragons then why go halfway) and the armor you can wear.

Well since they obviously wish us to be a combat "support" profession I think I may go all the way. Here is my new possible template:
Master Creature handler
Master Squad Leader
Ranger 0030
If all I am supposed to do is hide and hope my pets don't die then I might as well take Sl and use commands that won't get my a$$ killed. At least this way I will be useful. Especially snce no more uber buffs and no more soloing. Think about it, let's all start a CH/SL/Ranger guild lol.
