Thread: Angry Novice CH Here...

Look, for the past two days, I have been trying my hardest to tame really low level creatures. Such as a level 1 Cu Pa, level 1 Lesser Dew Back, level 1 Womp Rat, and the list may continue on any low level creatures on Tatooine. I have read other posts on this forum regarding this issue, but none have really satisfied what is going on. To make sure they don't "retreat" I even mask scent on these creatures. Nothing works, and now I'm quite frustrated. How do you send one of these "tickets"?

Well... first of all there is not a baby I have seen that doesn't "spook" near the end of the taming cycle.

Mask scent is required for taming.

That is by design, if you think that is bad wait till you get a skittish flyer or are in a group of high aggro's

If taming were a piece of cake, where would the excitement be? I as well as many/ most here love the adrenal rush of a tough tame...

If you do not like the way it is set up, you may want to excersize your right to try another profession before you get too far into it.

I miss my pets, my slobbering yet faithful protector named Cuddles the Rancor.

Do those critters really come in that low of a level or are you just looking at some low level's missions? Maybe some of the womp rats do, I dunno. You're not getting an eror message, are you? You could always try some Almond Crunchies or BE mod clothing. At CL80 a lot of the creatures I've been chasing have been grayed-out, non-agro and I haven't even used masked scent for taming for a while. Heck at CL80, anything we tame has parents that are gray to us. It might have some higher level cousins but for the most part they're all gray. Masked Scent just seems like more of a risk now, as opposed to grayed-out non-agro.

Just wait until you have to chase down a flier. Ugh! I don't think they're as fast or as far ranging as they used to be though.

The level of the creature is irreleveant for taming, unless it says (baby) a the end of the name, it's untamable.

It is possible to tame a baby without maskscent up, but I highly recommend you put it up anyway. I can get away with things as an MCH that you can't hope to simply because my odds of taming are much better due to skill modifiers.

There is a bug that's cropping up that when a creature goes into the "retreat" mode, it sets up a situtation where a CH can't tame anything at all. If that happens, best bet is to log out and log back in to clear this invisible state that you may have been put into.

A couple of points here that may be non-obvious if you are new. Luckily I knew another CH who explained stuff to me (where he learned it I do not know).

1. ONLY something that has "(baby)" in its name is tameable. So you should see something like, "lesser womp rat (baby)" and it will be very small.

2. You cannot tame "vicious" creatures (things that are hostile red dots on your radar) as easily as non-vicious ones. Even if the babies seem non-hostile (yellow), if the adults would be red dots, the babies are considered vicious. They are harder to tame and you only get bonuses from the left most skill branch for taming them.

3. The current level of the critter is NOT its tame level... the adult level is. How do you know the adult level? Look at the surrounding adults. For example, say you can tame up to 10 level creatures. You see a "level 1" cu pa (baby) so you figure you can tame it. Right now it is level 1, so it looks OK. BUT... the surrounding adults are level 15. This means that the baby is going to grow into a level 15 creature, and that is above your tame level, so you cannot tame it yet.

What you need to do is find babies in a mass of level 10 or lower ADULTS. The babies of those adults will be tameable as level 1 babies. Even a Fambaa (level 22) or something will have level 1 or 2 babies... but the babies will be level 22 when they grow up so you can't tame them yet a as a novice.

I am finding that mask scent on Dathomir is like a death wish now. Without it I can crawl all through gray conning MOBs, with it on, it will invariably fail leaving me to fight the gray con MOBs. I have had more luck taming without it than with it on Dath. Mask scent seems to be working like way back in the old days.

The way I see it working now is that once you initiate mask scent it checks your mask scent rating against surrounding MOBs, and rolls the dice. If you pass you get the scout xp, if you fail it brings the attention of a creature that, if vicious, will attack you. If you dont initiate mask scent then there is no check and gray con MOBs will not attack. This was like back in the fall of 2003 when yellow (non aggro) MOBs would attack when you failed your mask scent check, so that something that wouldnt normally attack you now does because of your enhanced ability. Maybe the creatures are just angry we are hiding from them.

Make sure you have auto attack off, this seems to be the culprit of the "can't tame that" bug. Control left click and get rid of that check marked attack.

Examine the creature if it is aggresive then it will use your viscious taming skill. (red named/dot creatures)The CL will be what your max creature level needs to be in order to tame it.

Refresh mask scent, clear all adults in the case of vicious creatures. Also Master Scout helps as with master scout you have +100 to mask scent.

Get a +25 taming vicious and +25 taming normal BE piece of clothing.

Store any pets you might have out.

Run in hit tame and stay as close to the baby as possible. Like others stated you can only tame (baby) creatures.

Good luck!

I've never been a talior or BE so these things i don't yet understand!

If i went out wearing:

Sunhat +25 tame

Shirt +25 tame

Pants +25 tame

and eating +tame food then my bonus and chance of taming would be alot better then me just wearing what i do now.

My +25 hat and eating munchies

You can only get a total of +25 bonus. So if you put on + 25 tame pants and + 25 tame shirt, one would be wasted.
