Thread: Viability of Flying and/or Cat-Type Mounts

I know I'm not the only person interested in a mount that has some use with it, but I haven't seen mention of specific mount requests in these forums in a long time. I know this isn't the most pressing issue, but what are your thoughts? Personally, I'd like to haul ass on the back of my lantern bird, but that's just me

I'm not really sure on the coding restrictions, so feel free to crush my dreams if it's not even possible.

I think flying mounts would be easy and do-able since the flying pets follow you, it should be easy to make the a mount and follow the same paths they already do, not like you could soar to different hights with them.

The issue is here I think they are done adding mounts of any type for a while, at least untill space is out, besides mounts are about useless. Now a flying mount that could keep up with a speeder, that would be cool. That would proably only be for MCH anyway cause those that make speeders would be Po'ed if you get something just as fast that wouldn't wear down.

For frlyin mounts, they could make a harness theat needs repaired to give it the same effect as reparing a speeder......

anyway don't hold your breath, would even begin to think it would happen untill at least after JTL

I'd like to put a saddle on my Grand Wrix or Giant Peko

(Though I think it would be really scary looking to ride my Rhoa Kwi Pack Leader ^_^)

I don't think it would be much harder to do than the mounts they have already implimented. The flyers don't realy fly all that high, certainly not higher than my Savage Humbaba puts me already.

I think we should select two pets we would realy like to see as mounts, one flyer model and one cat model and support them as mount additions to the game (being realistic in that the devs already have the next few months of updates planned and that creating mount models isn't the easiest thing in the wold in general.)

I'd suggest the (tiger models aka GSP Razor Cat) due to thier size and speed, and the Ancient Reptilian Flyer model (perhaps extensable to peko and lantern but not likely) as they look like dragons which is nifty!

Yeah, I'd love to turn one of my Greater Gulginaws into a mount. You'd have to speed it up for mount duty, though. Four-legged fliers are exceptionally slow (unlike two-legged fliers, who are lightning fast).

Part of the problem, to me at least, is the flying animals generally aren't big enough to ride. Look at most of them . . . their wingspan is huge, but their bodies are pretty tiny. Giant pekos would be nice, though. I think part of the problem is in how the game recognizes terrain negotiation. Objects like rocks and such have an invisible pillar above them that you cannot go through; this type of terrain negitiation is also part of the reason (I think) that we can't do things like jump over logs and smaller rocks. If we were on flying mounts, we would still intersect that pillar and would have to go around them, but from that perch you might not even see them. I can see how that would be a problem in trying to travel.

I see no reason why we can't have cat-model mounts though. They could use the same avatar animation as sitting on a speeder, leaned far forward over the cat's neck (no more "pole in the butt" riding animations, please!). Even so, with the avatar scaling the way it is, it should be limited to the larger models, like greater sludge panthers, crimson razor cats, grand wrix, and *gasp* great plains stalkers. Tusk cats SHOULD be added for obvious reasons, but the model should be made larger to compensate for riders. Tusk cats are actually supposed to be grand wrix size or larger, based on Lucas artwork.

I like your idea about sponsoring two models. Maybe three... I just want to see the awkwardness of someone riding Vynock

Like a wookiee trying to balance on it with one foot or trying to make himself as small as possible while he clings to its back

I want to see the horse like creatures mountable. But flying would be cool, how more difficult could it be over a speeder bike?

Well the DEV's best pay attention to our request for flying mounts. I have been reading/chking WoW and flying mounts is the *norm*. They have Griffins for public transport.

really, the vertical-axis shouldn't matter. just make all the "flying" mounts just kinda hover a few feet off the ground, same as speeders.

they should be master CH only, non-transferrable, and should have more terrain negotiation than anything, cuz like, they're not running. i get that flying up-hill would be harder than downhill, but then you'd have to make them faster at going downhill since they'd just glide. slower going up, faster going down... that's just too much coding to deal with

That's just it, the Y axis matters a lot, because you can't see the barrier. The only reason thatmobs fly so naturally now is because they ignore the Y axis barrier completely on terrain objects . . . things like trees, rocks, logs, etc. We and our pets, however, intersect these objects. Think of those logs that are flat on the ground in the Rori swamps. It makes no difference if you're a Bothan or a Malklok, if you're on a mount or a speeder, you are NOT going over that log, you're going around it. Mr. Squall is going through it, though.

What the devs are saying is that they can't do it right now because they can't disable that Y axis barrier, or we wouldn't have to negotiate around anything. You'd still have to weave around things with your winged mount, and face it, that would be pretty stupid, having to weave around things you can't even see that are the equivilent of ten feet under you.
