Thread: Here's A NEW Idea for CH, has anyone thought of Breeding? (Poll, all MCHs chime in!)

Now THIS would be a nice function for CHs, and I'll tell you why I think so. The BEs get to produce Frankenstein-eqsue pets, but what about CH's getting male and female babies, raising them, feeding them the right stock andbreeding them to produce a pet that is much more powerful than its parents? The concept would work loosely on how weaponsmiths get max damage and reliability out of weapon experimentation, but on a much different system. To balance this out with the BEs, you would be limited to the same general species (skins) to breed, and not able to breed an Arachne with a Tusk Cat.

A VERY basic idea of what I'm talking about exists in a game that many people have played, FFVII. ANYONE who has bred chocobos in this game knows what I'm talking about. Only in SWG, thesystem forCreature Handlers to do itwould be much more complex.

Certain limitations would have to be imposed on such a system so that the CHs would not outclass the BEs as breeders. So, before any of you say it, I know the BEs are given the sub-title 'Breeder' as one title they can wear, but what a BE does is not breed as much as it is genetic manipulation. Plus, breeding would give the CH the ability to produce a unique pet that is marginally (KEY WORD HERE IS MARGINALLY) better than its parents, and there would obviously have to be a cap on how high level the pet can go (with the occassional one of a kind baby pet with the power of a plains stalker). And BE pets would have to be sterile and not able to be used due to genetic mutation. This would ensure that BE and CH stay balanced and the BEs do not become obselete if an MCH would want a type of cat bred that had the poisoning capability of a Giant Crystal Snake.

You could go so many different avenues with this. You could have pets that are strictly breeding stock that you could not use in combat, and that you could sell off. There would be a failure rate, and a time limit on how soon pets could breed again. There might be a limit on how many times you could breed a pet during its lifetime. There could be new structures to store your pets in to breed them in, and certain new items (like flora or meat, depending on whether your pet is a herbivore or carnivore) that you would have to forage for.

You could theoretically have 'stables' to raise the pets in while they are breeding....you could only store so many pets at a time in the stables, and they would count as lots....... and these stables would serve an additional purpose......just in case your two level 56 Bull Rancors accidentally produce a level 72 Rancor....you'de obviously have to release it (just one example).

It's just an idea, something I think could really REALLY breathe life back into the CH class, since so many on this board agree that our class is dying out until or if the devs change things for us in PvP.

This would make the CH profession more true to life, I think. Some of you may mock it as just making us into zookeepers, but I think it would work. Just my opinion.

So, to the MCH's out there, my question to you is this....I personally find the idea of being able to actually breed pets a very fun prospect. If SWG could incorporate such a feature, would you:

a Take the time to breed pets?

b Think it was a waste of time?

P.S. Yes, we could choose to use the pets we produce by breeding in battle, but maybe a limitation on that would have to be that if you use them, they cannot be used for breeding for a certain length of time. Forgot to throw that idea in there, also.

YES. Very good idea. Please see the corral post, page 3&4. We are currently discussing this and how to emplement it. Please submit any ideas. Pluto started this and has some great ideas.

I like this idea... perhaps if it took a while to breed creatures with another one, such as a creature was pregnant for a month or somthing. Then when you get a baby thats more powerful than one of its parents you can breed the baby with another creature etc... eventually this could lead to stud farms i spose.

What about breeding different variants of creatures such as rancors and bull rancors.

Basic answer is yes, but the creatures would have to be tamable.

What theoretically WOULD work:

Yes, breeding two TAMABLE rancors would work.

Breeding aCrimson Razorcat with a GSP would work.

Breeding a fynock and a jungle fynock would work.

What would NOT work:

Breeding aMawgax with a Purgoriss would not work.

Breeding a Reptilian Flier with a Boar Wolf would not work.

Regard for species here would have to be paramount, or the system would be deemed very silly and not even considered by the devs at all, IMHO.

And spreadsheet, thank you, I will go to that thread and post my ideas there, and also post the link to that thread in this thread.

I'm continuing my ideas and discussion on this subject on this thread as well, but I encourage all CHs to respond to this poll. I would like to know if my idea is truly road-worthy, or if it is simply a waste.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Just to answer the original question ----- b.

I don't like the idea. Why make pets if they can't be the best. How could we compete with BE's?

We couldn't and SHOULDN'T be able to steal away the abilities of the entire BE profession. There has got to be another way to improve our class.

Down with breeding! Down with breeding!.....

Did you read my entire post? I put in checks and balances and LIMITATIONSfor the breeding process so that the BE's pets would still be unique. Example: We would not be able to breed any rancors with a poison attack. JUST rancors.

Creature Handler's are exactly what the name says. We handle creatures, we dont make them, we dont bread them.

Main Entry: han·dler
Pronunciation: 'han(d)-l&r, 'han-d&l-&r
Function: noun
1
: one that handles something
2a : a person in immediate physical charge of an animal; especially : a person who exhibits dogs at shows or field trials
2b : a person who trains or acts as second for a boxer
2c : a manager of a political figure or campaign

I did not pick up CH so that I could watch a bunch of pets have sex. I picked CH so I could control creatures. Currently the only thing we are allowed to do is fight. The problem is they dont even do that very well. What they should do is add more things that a pet can do. Like carry things, either packs that can hold large amounts of items or for fighting things like turrents or shields.

loonatik,

Your vote and opinion is appreciate, but I never said anything about watching pets do anything 'intimate'. That would obviously be a step in the breeding process that would have to be left out in the breeding process. The creatures you wouldn't actually be able to 'see' breed, perhaps you can store them in the stable in a locked compartment. And if you're watching them, they don't breed. Simple as that. Seeing them actually breed would NOT be something I would ever advocate being part of being able to mate creatures in the game. That wouldn't be appropriate.

I don't know....I'm getting either really good or really bad responses on this thread. Maybe it's a power that should be given to the BEs.

Why was Jody one-starred, he's right. To me, breeding seems pointless. Why breed a pet instead of buying a better pet from a BE. I know, I read what you said--paraphrasing, "You don't have to do this, its an option.", well, instead of wasting the developers time adding breeders to CH, just un-nerf our pets. Personally, I might drop CH soon anyway(not only because CH's can't PvP well, but thats a reason)

Ty,

I am sorry this past week has been hell. Wife had a four day weekend. Kids were off nine days. The Ranger forum was a mess with the proposal I made.

I am by no means the buck stops here guy. I am just trying to tie together what other people have sed the best I can for the Corral Thread. This seems a likely place to debate anything for the breeding part of any corral it keeps things cleaner. Then again it also puts too many ideas into to many different places lol. After the past week I for one can definitely empathize for Vert. I may even send him a belated holiday strip-o-gram.

After beating the wife and kids, kicking the dog, reading the main post, smoothing things with the Rangers, I had little time to develop any real thoughts on your own thread, I think I slept and ate a few times. lol

I am really at a stand still here. I offered up the idea of cross breeding in the Corral thread in the semipolished revision. This seems like the best compromise if one would look at it with some degree of seriousness. If a CL35 pet tamed from the wild is 10K HAM and a BE CL35 pet were to be 15K HAM. Would it not seem reasonable that we could breed 12.5K HAM Hybrids. I use the term Hybrid because they should not be allowed to breed past the F1 generation. At least with any higher statistics. imho This all can approach the territory of the BE's all to quickly. I do you say there is no way we should ever be able to do that. But unless you limit it some way (such as F1 generations are always hybrids) there is little in the way of keeping it from snowballing.

I guess my point is ifyou breed the P1 generation yielding a HAM of MAXP1+N%*P1. This if turned around becomes your P2 and P2 yeilds MAXP2+N%*P2. The HAMs exponentially grow. With simple substitution, P1 HAM=1000 and the Percentage for a Good Mating is Max of 10% then you have a pet of 1100. Then P2 will be 1100 and F2 ultimately is 1210. So on and so on until one pet some day is 25K HAM and still CL10.

Selective breeding for color when the paired allelles is unknown could be fun. A chance at increasing base movement rates could be useable. Damage modifiers as strength.

Overall I am for it. To the extent that BE's start shying away. This game is really one of balance and yet again it is politics.

I will not pretend I have read every word in this post.

The major concerns are what are the supreme limiting conditions? Do people realize CH selling to CH provides no more market than now? And will there be enough support if you do limit it to MCH only? The statistics can all come later.

I really think you're doing a great job here. If there is some concensus try to present it over on the other thread as well. It really does get hard for some of us to focus on both.
