This wouldnt be as much of a problem if everybody didnt have to do a second search basically everytime they did one. I mean who wants results from 2003 to be listed at the top? So everytime we do a search we have to resort from newest to oldest and all day long we get the annoying "too many searches in progress" bs. Oh and dont forget the wonderfull progress bar on occasion. Unless I am missing an option somewhere to sort my search results from newest to oldest automatically, then there needs to be a change. I cant tell you how many times I have searched for something, gotten results, attempted to sort them from new to old just to end up at the "too many searches in progress" page. Of course, that destroys my search results and I have to search yet again.

I totally Agree. The amount of old and out of date info that pops up FIRST is rediculous. Take a search on what holocrons do for example. I don't need to know the history of what holocrones have done starting in 2003, I would want to know what they do NOW. Please change the default listing order to most recent posts first.

Great post .

There is nooption toget searches to return hits sorted by descending date. Just in case SOE is reading this, here is a nice straightforward account of a typical search attempt so you can understand what your customers are going through:

1. Enter a search term and hit "Search"

2. Get "Too many searches in progress" error message

3. Go back

4. Repeat 1-3 several times

5. Finally get a page of searches! Oops, showing only 20 hits per page. Wanted 100. Change to 100.

6. Get "Too many searches in progress" error message again.

7. Back to square 1. Repeat 1-6 several times.

8. Finally get the search results again. Naturally the entire first page is from 2003, utterly useless. Click on "DATE/TIME" to sort descending by date.

9. Get "Too many searches in progress" error message

10. Go back

11. Get "Too many searches in progress" error message AGAIN, despite the fact that I have my browser set to NOT automatically refresh each page.

12. Need to once again go back to square 1 and start over. Repeat 1-11 several times.

13. Finally get a date-sorted list... yay!!!

14. Schedule an appointment with a carpal tunnel specialist.

I spent over an hour yesterday trying to do a search on lightsaber crafting tools to figure out whether the "guaranteed critical assembly" bug has been fixed yet or not. Never got a successful search. So I resorted to paging through hundreds of posts manually and finally found my answer. It's just sad that human searching is faster than computer searching on this website. Yo, SOE, it's the 21st Century now .

my guess is if they defaulted the newest dated posts first, it would significantly cut down on the load. At the same time I can only guess that it would also reduce the "too many searches" problem. I mean its only common sense, it takes everyone 2 searches to find something, cut that in half and poof, half of the searches per day disapear. MAGIC!!!!!!!!

2 more options are needed that will drastically fix this

1. Return results from XX days ago

2. Exact Phrase search - every now and then I want to search for +25 attachments in the trade forms, type in "+25" in quotes and see what happens.

Also, what is this Return only threads with no replies options? who needs that? How about, an option, Only return Beginning Thread message, As in, Say I want to search for Tuesday Tips, just the originating message only. One day I wanted to see all the tueday tips that have been posted, but I didn't want to see the 1000s of replies to them. I never could figure out how to do it.

Don't forget:

15. Click on a post in the date sorted list, info not found in post so you hit back "Too many searches in progress" error message AGAIN

16. Repeat steps 1-15 selecting a different post each time until you get the info you need.

Not to be negative, but this is the worste search feature on any site, ever, in the history of the internet, ever, period.

With ya... the search can be a pain a lot of times because of to many searches going on. We are paying money for this thing monthly ... spend some of you employees time improving this.

Addendum:

15. Use the "Open in New Window/Tab/etc." feature of your browser so you don't lose your place in your search.

Even better: use Opera, which doesn't trigger new searches when going back and remembers what you typed into the search form if you back up that far. (IE is particularly bad at using its cache, no matter what your settings.)

The original post (default to sorting by date/time, or let us set a default for our searches) would be very nice, but here SOE is stuck with whatever they can get Lithium to do for them.

while that works to an extent, yer not thinking. These forums should not be built around opera, are u kidding me? They should work near perfect with IE, and certainly work fine with firefox. People shouldnt have to use Opera to do what yer saying. These are small errors on their part that need to be addressed because they add up to the major problem that these forums cant handle and traffic above a crawl speed without being brought to its knees.

Err...huh? Who said you had to use Opera, or that they shouldn't fix/change any of the things that have been posted? All I said was that it has some features that work around problems on these forums, and you might find them useful while waiting (..and waiting...and waiting...) for Lithium to fix the underlying issues.

For example: I would love it if they sorted searches by date by default, or if they let us set how to sort them by default. We've been bugging them about it for almost two years now (as you should know, coming from 9-14-03). I'm not going to hold my breath.

Getting the "too many searches" message really turns people off from searching, myself included. It happens 9 out of 10 times and I end up going elsewhere for answers when I shouldn't have to.

God forbid you post a question in the forums because then you get flamed for not doing a search.
