Thread: New and Improved Profanity Filter Idea (customisable)

Hello people,
Being a UK resident and brought up speaking a different style of english to our good friends in the US of A I have found that often our versions of profanities are somewhat different to those of the developers. Although I'm a person of the world and tend to run with the filter turned off there are times when I wish I could make better use of it. Thus I have come up with an idea for a new and improved filter which would be of use to everyone. The idea really is simple and its just this :
Let the end user define and edit the profanity list.
This would mean that parents of children playing the game could tailor the list of allowed words to the local dialect their native language. That's right, a customisable filter would of course allow filtering of profane and offensive words in ANY language.
Further the file containing the list should be easily accessible (let us know the file name) so that it can be posted on the site enabling others to download pre compiled filters.
I would make extensive use of this functionality myself even though I have stated that I usually run without it. Why? because I, like many of my friends in the game, am an older member of the comunity and thouroughly destest those lazy inarticulate "players" who cannot be bothered to take the time to type legibly. I would filter ALL 1337 and txt speak, Yes im THAT miserable

of course I did onlymean a client side list not for users to edit the server side list.

I see where you are going with this and I think it's a great idea. I'm more aware of the communication differences since half my guild is in North America and the rest of it is in Europe (UK, Sweden, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland).

I can imagine it now..
Player types "I pwned sum rebel n00bs in Bestine"
And I see: "I (idiot) (cant spell) (yawn) in Bestine"
also If it was already possible to do this I would have been blissfully ignorant of the player who approached and asked me "cud u gve me sum 1337 BuffzOrz plz?" (he did actually put a "?" on the end of that, I forget who he was but he is probably one of the people on my ignore list.

My pleasure! It is horribly embarrassing sometimes to see what passes for the English language in this game. I refuse to assist people who talk to me like that. I have all the patience in the world for people who are not native English speakers. The way I figure, you are going out of your way to learn MY language so you can communicate. If this was a German game, Swedish Game, I would expect that I would take the time to learn those languages.
The leet speak? *rolls eyes* It's one thing to use some phrases here and there as a joke. But people really talk like that in game? *shakes head* I have actually stopped a performance when people try to talk to me like that. I *can* choose to not associate with people who won't be courteous enough to write even decently well.

Having worked for a multinational company, I know exactly what you mean, Tsumi - especially as it relates to American vs English slang. I remember having to explain to employees on numerous occasions thatwhile what they meant was totally innocent in their native land, it had very different connotations in the country where they were visiting. The four examples that come immediately to mind are:
- A female American employee was talking about putting items in her fanny pack. (intendedtranslation - fanny pack = bum bag)
- A male American employee was talking about a potential customer who blew him off. (intended translation - blew him off = ignored him)
- A male British employee was visiting the San Francisco area and said that he needed to go outside to smoke a f@g. (intended translation - f@g = cigarette)
- A male British executive sitting in an executive meeting in the US, when he saw the revenue projections he exclaimed, "Blow me!" (intended translation - blow me = an exclamation of surprise, short for "Blow me down", meaning something like I am so surprised you could knock me over just by blowing.)
So given situations like these, it probably makes a lot of sense to put in a customizable word filter. Given that we can already colorize words in the options menu, it probably would be fairly easy to implement a feature as you suggest. As for those who use 1337-speak, I usually/addignore them, as I do with all the spammers and beggars. So, I think there is a lot of merit to your idea, and I'm not just playing silly buggers.

Yay thanks appreciate the support. I won't regail you with my own anecdote of when a friend of mine visited New York but it runs along the lines of a barber shop and my friend saying he could really do with a ciggarette (using the english slang) and a rather camp barber dropping his scissors.
