Thread: Why I Don't Think SWG Is Fun Anymore

I'm not going to get into a bunch of flaming and "you suck SOE", because I know that it will get me nowhere. But, I was sitting and thinking today after I realized thatI have gone from having 16 hrs to grind my Jedi to get full template to about85 hrs with the next xp nerf. And I realized that the last time I actually hadany fun playing SWGwasabout a year ago. A side note on the statement I read on one post that this is not an xp nerf: It most definitely is.One definition of nerf that I found was: "In the context of computer games, a nerf is a change to the rules of the game that is generally considered to have a weakening or negative effect upon the affected object(s). The term 'nerf', originating from the days of Ultima Online, relates to how Nerf toys for children use safe, soft foam and plastic to mimic sports balls and guns."So, this is a GROUP xp nerf, because you now receive less xp when you are grouped than you did prior to the patch.

But, enough about that. My issue with the game is a little broader, it is just aggrevated by the fact that all of these unexpected game changes are constantly occurring. I have a problem with the grinding system of SWG in general. I have never played another MMORPG, I only play SWG because I am a fan of Star Wars. But, I think that grinding is the least fun thing that I have ever done on a computer game, and I have never heard anybody else in the game say "I love grinding. It is so fun".

I know that there has to be some method to control player advancement, because SOE wants to receive subscription revenue for a certain number of months prior to a player reaching their preferred character template. But, grinding is not fun, it is just a means to an end. I grind so that I can have a character than I can use to PVP effectively and do higher level PVE and content-based quests. This has always been my goal, because then I could play the game occassionally and have fun when I play. Instead, I have spent the past year grinding my character template, then grinding FS XP, and now grinding Jedi XP, while trying to take a break occassionally to actually do something fun on the game with my friends.

So, long story short. Get rid of grinding altogether. Who needs it? Make all skill gain content-based quests that you receive from designated NPCs. And if you want to control the speed at which someone can reach combat level 80, or FS, or Jedi, then set a minimum wait in between doing quests to reach your desired timeline. That way people don't have to dedicate their lives to grinding their template on SWG so that they can one day hope to actually do something fun. They could log on occassionally and do the necessary quests to gain their skills at the set intervals, and if they want to play in between those time periods, then they could actually go and do something fun with their friends, like content-based quests, PVP, or just hang around in the cantina and chat. Whatever floats your boat.

Well, that's my 2 cents. I am at the point now that if the xp nerf stays in place, I do not feel that I can gain xp quick enough to offset the xp loss that will be incurred if I get ganked by a BH. So, without a hope of finishing the template for my Jedi, I will never actually reach the point that I will be able to have fun playing SWG. Therefore, I will be cancelling my account, because I'm tired of paying to work SWG, not play SWG. And since my other 2 characters (different accounts) are just there to support my Jedi, I will be cancelling their accounts as well.

Nuff said.
