I guess I'm getting old, but:
When reading these forums (and just about any other forum on the net I guess), I often come upon abbreviations and acronyms with which I am not familiar. Sometimes it is obvious from the context what they mean, mostly it is not. Most people (I would hope) use acronyms to abbreviate typing, others obviously use them to appear cool or more knowledgeable than they really are. Others again are obviously not aware of what exactly the acronyms they use really means.
The most misused of all acronyms would be LOL (see below). It would be interesting to see some statistics on how many of all the posts in these forums that contains this acronym. I wonder how many of those posters that actually laughed at the time, or even thought it was especially funny
Anyway, my point is that while acronyms might be good at times (ofcourse), it is not really necessary to use them all the time. At least write out the whole expression once in a while. I guess this would be impossible for the second category of posters I mentioned above, the "l33t d00ds" (I won't even go there, but search for "leetspeak" if you are interested), but for the rest of us I think it would be nice to be able to read a post without using a dictionary or searching the net for explanations when it isn't really necessary.
I copied these from the WoW (World of Warcraft) glossary. Nothing new for the majority, I know. I just happened to like the explanations
:
LOL - Lots of Laugh or Laughing Out Loud. This abbreviation indicates something is really funny. Unfortunately although very common, that term became uncool a long long long time ago. Other alternatives that you can use instead are "hehehehe" or "hahahaha" which aren't the best but are more hip. ROFL should also be avoided to appear cool.
Newbie - A term that sometimes means new player but also is used to mean a player is not very good.
Newb - Short for Newbie. See above.
N00b - An incredibly uncool way to say newb. Don't use it.

is an interesting post and is an opportunity for people to post their
"Appropriate for these forums" acronyms that people may not be familiar
with.
Carebear - Term used to define
those that do not like PVP or that think PVP should be consentual only.
Try not to use it, its really not a nice term
PVP - Player vs. Player (not a toughie
QFE - Quoted for Emphasis.... its not really that cool to use - I'm guilty of it myself sometimes
WFN - Wrong Forum Noob ---- again
used sparingly its not too bothersome but some people have a bad habit
of making it really big and irritating. Used when people post off topic
in a thread or forum.
