Thread: NYT Article on Online Gaming: SOE Sounds Rather Defeated And I Am Very Disappointed
This is an excerpt from a New York Times article appearing today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/06/arts/design/06worl.html?8hpib
Note the quote in the article from SOE:
"World of Warcraft is completely owning the online game space right now," said Chris Kramer, a spokesman for Sony Online Entertainment, buyer of Matrix Online and one of Blizzard's chief rivals. "Look, Matrix Online is good, but it's like being in the early 90's and trying to put a fighting game up against Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter; it's just not going to happen. There are a lot of other online games that are just sucking wind right now because so many people are playing WOW."
And why has this happened? WOW would not have its subscription numbers if SOE turned this game around. SWG is by far a much better concept, steeped in both movie and fanlore. It is unfathomable to me that SOE cannot recognize this and fix its problems.
You have a whole community that has sought fix after fix, including improvements in communications and yet at the present time, all of the communications appear one sided. The Correspondents make the requests of the player base and the Developers tell the players how it is going to be. Is it any wonder then that people are going to other games that are more in tune with what they want to play?
