Thread: I get the feeling that SOE is trying to phase out dial-up customers from their player base...

Just found out that the RotW files are 300mbs large. Not sure how large the CU is on top of that though. I tried downloading the TC patch so I might be able to test and this is when I found out that there is no way I am going to be able to download RotW unless they start pre-patching soon. I feel sorry for those dial-up customers who only have ISPs that allow them 2-4 hours of uptime for connection before they have to reconnect. I doubt that even with pre-patching they will be able to get this mega download.

Sure, we can get it 3 weeks after the digital download appears, but why should we be slapped in the face like that? They say they are going to be using BITS, haven't seen it doing anything as of yet. May 5, 2005 is approaching fast and they have yet to put any of the files up to be downloaded.

As my title suggests, I get the feeling that SOE is trying to phase out dial-up customers from their player base!

BITS only works in the background when you are connected, so unless you are leaving a character on running a macro around the clock (unlikely on dial-up!) it probably will have no impact for you.

I thoght BITS was supposed to run when the computer is just sitting around doing nothing, but connected to the internet? If you have to be in game, then how good will it actually work for dial-up customers to begin with? They say it is supposed to be great for us dial-up users, but if teh above is true, how can they come up with that logic?

For BITS to work, you have to have the launchpad sitting open on the desktop.. It will then happily download anything available through the BITS service while you're doing other things. It doesn't work if you're actually ingame playing.. just when the launchpad is open. (I assume you have to sign into the launchpad as well.. though I'm not positive on this fact).

I don't dout it. From a technical standpoint, trying to synchronize dial-up and broadband connections is difficult and can cause problems. Besides as the costs of broadband goes down, and it's availibility goes up, dial-up is rapidly becomming obsolete.

Problem is that dial-up will be around for many years to come. More then likely this will be my form of connection as the Telco has told me that I may see some form of broadband from them in maybe 20 years. Cable company is worse, they have no plans to run any lines my way as the closest pole to me that has cable is 9 miles away. There will continue to be many many people like me that have no choice but to stick with dial-up. While SOE may be trying to phase out it's dial-up customers, companies such as the maker of Guildwars seem to understand that broadband will not be avialble to everyone any time soon and therefore have made the choice to continue to make their game dial-up accessible and from what I have heard from many people is that they have never seen such a rock solid connection from any game on their dial-up like they have seen from Guildwars. I really don't want to stop playing SWG, but if I am forced to because they won't continue to keep the game accessible to dial-up connections, it seems I would have no other choice.
