This has been discussed before, specifically here.
I live in a rural area, and the only internet service available to me is via Dialup. Before you start trotting out any broadband solutions...
Cable: Not run in my area, period. This is not an option.
DSL: I am too far from the closest CO. This is not an option. (Effective limit for DSL is 25kft, most companies won't run unless you're 18kft or less. I'm at 27kft)
T1: I have actually asked about this. The infrastructure running to my house is far too old, and would require them to updgrad the entire system along. They will not do this.
ISDN: Again, would require an infrastructure update. They will not do this.
BPL (Broadband Over Powerline): Still in early testing in very very few markets. (no where close to me)
Satellite: Ping times between 1500ms-3000ms. This is not a viable option. (not to mention the $700 startup cost)
Fiber: Not available in my area.
So, I ask the development team to please take this into consideration.
You have paid for the licence for BITS tech, this is a viable option. Push out for 1 day before publishes, then go live. This will help a LOT of your dialup customers.
Another great option that many of us have been clamoring for: Make the patch files available via FTP/HTTP transfer. A simple website setup with a list of the files and their locations so we can throw them into a download manager would be excellent. This would allow even a new dialup player a chance to get in.
None of the options I've mentioned would impact a broadband user in the least. Sure a patch would be pushed back 1 day, but overall that's not a big deal... And the availability of the files via direct download rather than the push client would only help.
Thank you.

Did they stop using BITS? I haven't had to download a patch in two months or so.. but I did apply some. I just assumed that was BITS in action.

From what I can tell, it has been at least decreased by quite a bit. I had to pull all 400mb or so of the CU, and that kept me out of game for nearly a week as the client would contantly fail, and I'd have to restart it (I only get to be on for 24 hrs before I'm booted).

hmm, I'm pretty sure it's turned on.. if it took a week to do 400MB when you were dedicating all your bandwidth to it, think of how long it would have taken with the BITS stream.
