Developers? Hmm. I don't think they programmers. I think theyre the ones who write the "script" for the game. They determine what the overall product is. Sort of like directors of a movie. Or writers on a tv show. They come up with the theoretical product and send it out to the laymen (programmers, artists, etc) who build the actual product. IMO. I'd love to know exactly if im wrong.

I think the question for "What it takes to be one" is "how much experience do i have to have"?

I know on their application site that a lot of the programmers are "Sr" positions and require previous MMO experience, which isn't all that uncommon now I suppose... since MMOs have been going strong for what, 8 or 10 years now?

I graduate with my BS this fall, and I know I'd love the opportunity to even see how it all works. I know it's not everyone cackling in a corner on how they can mess up the game, nor is it that anyone is incompotent, merely that the game is ultra complex in how it works (object oriented game on a top of OO language, i'm sure). I suppose it's just a dream though, because I simply don't have that kind of experience...

I suppose if they are looking for intern or Jr positions you should be able to get in. Those I would see as mainly bug fixers, and not too much heavy feature developing, those are usually left for the Sr positions.

If you are serious about working for them I would send my resume in wether they are hiring or not, because sometimes they are going to look and here comes your resume, you usually have a good chance of being contacted. The is howI got one job, right place at the right time. It was the day after everyone walked out and they were going nuts. I walked in and asked if they were hiring, the boss came out, asked me a few questions and said your hired, your desk is back here.

I know I wouldn't have a problem with a Jr or Intern position. Just the chance to work on something like this would be pretty amazing.

You'll see a lot of postings for 'senior' level positions because it's much harder to find 'senior' level people. Often companies won't work too hard to publicize junior-level positions since they are much easier to fill.

As far as a place like SOE goes, can apply anyway even if you don't fit in to any of the posted openings. You've got two possible results:

-Your resume goes on file or gets passed around to be considered for an unpublished opening.

-The HR person is pissed off that you can't read the job posting, and they circular-file your resume.

Neither result is really 'bad' from your point-of-view.

I'm baaaaaack
And it looks like I'll be going again.

Hmm to be a dev, well i am guessing some training at least in how all this stuff works, general knowledge of how to make it work, and access to a large supply of advil or your choosen headache relief med when the dohicky does not work with the whatchamacallit thingy that gives the thingamajig the needed flimflam
