I'm writing a paper for college on the internet and specifically on recreational interaction between nations through its use.
I wanted to use galaxies as one of my examples. I tried google but couldn't find anything on the demographics of galaxies. If i had to make a hypothesis these are the ballpark stats i came up with:

US 70-80%
UK 8-15%
Canada 8-15%
other 1-5%

I don't want to look like a fool in my paper. and i think galaxies would be a great example to use. does anybody feel these numbers are really off? if a dev reads this and u could give an offical breakdown that would be awesome. maybe even get a friday feature for it

Where did you get those numbers?
They are waaay off, that I assure you. Germans alone are propably somewhere around 5% (most of which on gorath and the european servers), uk somewhere around 10% I'd guesstimate. At least 10% more from the rest of europe, Japan propably has some players on their servers too (5% of all players perhaps?), another 5-10% asien (japanese and koreans mostly I'd assume) players playing import versions, which leaves 60% to all of America + rest.
These numbers are of course pure guesses, but considering there are 3 Servers with next to no American players + purely Japanese servers + 1 Server that is considered the inofficial german Server with propably a german population of 30% or more, there is no way over 80-95% of all players are americans like you estimate.

They are more reasonable, although I'd estimate more Asians, less US.
But all those are of course estimates. To get more well founded numbers, you should make polls on all Server forums (better ask a forum moderator before...) and then add some non-uk europeans and asiens to make up for those players that don't post here because of the language barrier.

United States 60-66%
Europe 20%
UK 10-12%(probably deserves its own stat outside of europes' 20%)
Asia 5-7% (mostly likely majority japan)
1-5% other( i think originally i over estimated on canada. it probably belongs in the other category. the country's population is only 30 million people)
