You came off as Database programer. Why else would you be offering input on somthing you don't know? Thats like me trying to tell a Mechnic whats wrong with a car when the extent of my knowledge of the workings of cars consists of Gran Turismo three and four. And my knowledge of how they work is somthing to the effect of put gas in, turn key, (neglect to put on seatbelt for ticket later) push peddle one to go push peddle two for stop press peddle three if I knew how to drive stick in anything other than a virtual world, turn wheel this way or that way, pull over and ask for directions. But alas you edited your post and no one has quoted you and thus no one will ever know who Superman really is. (I hear hes Clark Kent, but that might not be true.)

*sigh* I was willing to put the argument to rest but I guess you still aren't satisfied. First of all, you don't have to have a career in database programming to know about at least a few things about database programming. Same goes for cars or any other subject you can think of. Unlike a lot of other people who feel the need to place themselves in fictional professions before making an argument, I'm comfortable to speak with the knowledgeI acquired in places like school.

I'm sorry if you feel threatened by my high school-level knowledge of primary keys or whatnot, it's really not that advanced and I thought I would offer a theory. I admitted my theory was wrong, if you want to contribute your own feel free to do so, I won't insult you if you aren't a database expert.

Actually, I did let it go. Hence the Superman comment basically saying theres no proof of your statment, move along.

As anyone can tell you Highschool is nothing more than a breife tuch on things. It normally doesn't get in depth, its primary goal is to help strengthen your interests in a subject and start you down your path. The actual process of learning most of the tools and or tricks of the trade are on site or in college. If you know anything about data basing and whats its sole function is (or you've played this game for atleast 3 months) you would know any key can be changed in a database. Any feild edited. Hence, ill be it poor example, but the CU and the wepon conversion. That is the point Im making that you didn't understand when you first posted because you didn't read thru. Given the fact you didn't understand the problem, your post seemed as though you "understood" yet had not a clue about programing even though upon reading (which can no longer be proven thanks to your edit job earlier) you acted like a programer. However, since you want to try and tell me how much you learned in highschool. Anyone whos gotten into the most readily avalible of Database tools, Excel, knows how to do a search and substitute in a database, and thats all we are talking about doing here.

Either way, it is laziness and nothing but, that prevents SOE from giving us the ability to change our forums names. It may be policy that we can't change our names, but no databasing or technical reason prevents it. So Tiggs post should say either of the following.

Sorry but we wont because our web dev team are to busy playing pong to earn their pay. But we think they are funny and keep them around for the giggle we get when you noobs can't do somthing on the forums.

Or the more "PC" answer.

Sorry but we wont change any names due to an internal policy.

Neither of which were stated.

And Com its ok. You admited you didn't understand the question. And now I have explained why a highschool education is no longer all that is needed into days world. Hope you either don't go into Database programing or plan to goto college.

I was about to waste more of my time writing a lengthy, intelligent response toyour brand new post about nothing, but it occurred to me that anyone who devotes their signature space to mock the entire dev team does not visit the forums with the intention of having an intelligent discussion. So I'll take the high ground and allow this thread to return to it's regularlyscheduled subject.

I HAVE seen two in game names changed. One was Dirty Sanchez and one was Carpet Muncher. It took a couple months but they were finally contacted by a CSR to have their name changed. This was about August of 2003. I can see why they won't though. They would probably recieve a fair number of name change requests. These requests would draw attention away from other more pressing CSR matters. Anyways thats my speculation. It CAN be done, but I imagine its really more trouble than its worth to open THAT floodgate.

I think changing names to an extent would be greatly beneficial. I know it is possible but it should be more acessible, for many reasons.

- When people join the RP side of play the names they chose to start don't really fit in the scheme of the galaxy and if they could change it would make the game more enjoyable. i.e. bunnyhunter NewPlayerTutorial is a name on my server. if he wanted to change this to a more convinceing SW name he should be able to.

- If there is a player dispute, one player can harass another player just by using their name. Ignore and filing complaints are only so successful. this could really resolve some issues in that area.

- Mairrage. If i were to get married in game there shoud be the option for my "wife" to accept my last name. This would greatly enrich the role-playing experience.

- Finally, faction changes may require a player to change the name of a character to hide them selves from the authorities of the faction the just left, in RP anyway.

These are just a few points and i think it is a great idea and should be a easy process if players choose to do so.

Thank you

those are some good points but name changes can also bring problems...
