June 6, 1944
6:30 am...off the coast of Normandy, Operation Overland's beach assault began. Many of us here (hopefully) know what transpired on that day, and what day it is now(the 60th anniversary) and how important Operation Overlord was to winning the war against theAxis (and pretty much saving the world). Ironically, a mere 7 days after Memorial Day over here in the U.S. still, today should be remembered. The brave men that died on that longest day will behonored, and never forgotten. From 0630 hours to 2400 hours...over 18 hours of fighting...men jumped and landed into Normandy...many became Heroes and many more who were unsung Heroes as well. Some of these men...were also commandos.

Some may ask, why post a small memorium on these forums, well thats just it...not only to remember these brave men, but to also give a toast to our RL counterparts, from the British Commandos to the French and then to the brave men of the Airborne (yes they too can be considered commandos...especially Easy Company of the 101st Airborne and their attack at Brecourt which saved countless of lives on Utah Beach). We here are commandos, but those of us who are dedicated to the profession are not only commandos in-game..but also in their hearts in real life (its..our "happy place"
).
So I give a toast of Varsian Brandy to these brave lads 60 years ago, and their sacrafices on that fateful day.
Operation Overlord by no means easy...it was one of the most planned, one of the most largest, and one of the most gambled invasions in World War II...it had a chance to fail...I see a similar event in our future as well - The Combat Balance. Just like D-Day...the wait...the planning has been long (for me and a few of us here...12 months come this July) for others, only mere days. Nevertheless...the day the combat balance is published to live...it will be our "Day of Days"
And no doubt is the CB risky as well...theres a chance that it may indeed fail to meet up to the player's expectations..or break something big...really big...in the game. Still, there is a big hope that its exactly what we've been waiting for...and for many of this community, we will try and make that a reality. The wait and testing until then...will be our "Longest Day"....as it was also delayed till Publish 11. Just like how General Eisenhower postponed the Invasion to June 5th so more landing craft could be made (which ultimately was wise)...perhaps that is true with the devs...maybe, just maybe our waiting will pay off.
Just maybe...the hope that this will all work out is more than enough for me to go ahead and lvl a commando in TC, to get a chance to help with the testing. The same hope that the Allies had to break Hitler's Atlantic Wall, and then ultimately end the wall allowed them to succeed that day long ago.
So, I propose a toast to our fallen RL Counterparts, and to all the brave souls that day! Forever is the Commando!
I myself had a Grandfather (29th Division, Omaha Beach) and two Great-Uncles (Utah Beach) who fought on that day, so remembering and honoring is important to me and my family. With this, I end my small tribute to the men that fought - and died - on the beaches of Normandy...and also to contemplate about the RL Commandos who played a pivotal role in that day.
Goodnight Folks
