commando

Commando, small, elite military raiding and assault unit or soldier. Although the word was coined in the Boer War (1899-1902), the role is as old as battles themselves. In 1940, when the British organized a number of such units, the term came into wide use. Made up of hand-picked volunteers, specifically trained for dangerous work, these units were employed in missions throughout World War II, including the raid on Field Marshal Rommel's headquarters (1941). The U.S. Army's Ranger battalions were also popularly called commandos. After World War II the British army's commandos were disbanded, but the British Royal Marine Commandos were employed in the Korean war and the Suez operation, and the elite Special Air Service has engaged in extensive action against the Irish Republican Army and other nonstate-sponsored commandos. The United States has active commando, or Special Operations, units, including the Navy Seals and the Army's Rangers, Green Berets (Special Forces), and Delta Force. Some of these forces were used in the Persian war, vietnam war, and operations in Afghanistan (2001), and numerous counterinsurgency operations. Soviet commandos (Spetsnaz) fought in the Afghanistan. Israel and Vietnam have particularly proficient commando units. Commandos today often use special weapons, such as satellite communications, silenced small arms, exotic explosives, and delicate sensors.

So in essence were the cream of the crop when it comes to taking out targets undetected. We slip in complete a mission, and get the hell out. They should have commando missions like they do BH missions. Maybe like we have to take out a At-st factory or kill a high levelImperial/rebel officer inside one of those static bases. anyways just my thoughts.

EXCELLENT idea.

that was a great suggestion specialforce. And might i add an impressive display of military history.

Commando missions, i would suggest that you may only recieve commando missions if you join a military faction (rebels or imperials). Thats the catch to not having to master two skill lines such as BH and only needing to master marksmen. Other than that it seems absolutly perfect to have commando missions, brilliant.

Now THAT would rock. If we had clandestine missions then I'd be a Commando regardless. I was so looking forward to Commando/Scout before I started reading the impressions on these boards. . . sigh I'll probably be a Commando anyway just soI won't be yet another another Bounty Hunter to join the already millions of people wanting to be one.

In other words Commando = original. Just look at the professions. . . hardly anyone posts to this compared to the others. We'd be an elite group for the few that acutally make it. I hope the devs do visit this profession and make it what it could be instead of the nerf it seems to be now (yes seems. . .maybe this commando really does rock who knows).

It's always a mistake to think that the name was chosen then the class designed to fit the name. And applying history to a name doesn't necessarily work. How many non-history buffs would know what a grenadier is? Asoldier that uses grenades?

In the modern units you describe, every soldier uses unique weapons and has unique skills, unlike the profession in this game. Essentially, all Riflemen, Pistoleers, Carbineers, Bounty Hunters, etc.qualify to be named a Commando in these units. Some are Snipers, some room-to-room experts, some demolitions, and so on.

Given that the Profession is centered around Heavy Weapons, what would be a historical name for it? Stormtrooper. It's already taken. So you have to choose something.

Though the idea is neat, it won't happen. Riflemen (snipers) qualify for the same treatment by your own logic. BH's get as their unique perk their own missions. Commandos as their perk get Heavy Weapons noone else can use.

Ok well commando has been decided as a heavy weapons class...

maybe when thay have new classes in the expansion they'll have somehting in the more tradition sense of commando...the could name the class Guerilla...that would fit an assasin/ sabator.

The message is over a year old, yet sounds like the same old same old things some of us are still saying. Really makes you wonder what's been done at all, doesn't it?
