So I got to thinking about what could make grenades better, and it occurred to me - what makes them useful in real life? Aside from the fact that they explode. Non-linear attacking. In other words, one of the benefits of a grenade would be the fact that you can use them without facing your opponent, whether you're hiding or they're hiding.
Now this might be a difficult thing to program...hell it might be impossible, but stay with me here.
I don't think it could be made as simply a "you always have a clear line of sight" thing. It'd work to be able to throw it around a corner or over a rock, but I get the feeling the game doesn't discriminate between when your enemy is behind a small obstruction or when they're deep within a bunker, I think "you cannot see your target" is always the same criteria. Even if it does have a difference, thats probably a bug-prone idea. So simply being able to throw them at the target around things wouldn't work.
But then I got to thinking - well you're not really throwing it AT the target if they're behind something, are you? You're throwing it in they're direction, after all, the whole point of the grenade is its area effective and you want to catch them in the blast radius. What if you could do an untargeted attack? In other words you attack certain spot, not a person in particular. Now there's two ways you could do that which I can think of:
A) Have some sort of control of the range you want, some sort of command which you can create a hotkey for and link to another hotkey button where you put your stack of grenades. Basically telling the system "use slot X (where the grenade is kept) to attack 30 meters in front of me". Then when you threw it, ground zero of the grenade's blast radius would be 30 meters ahead of you, and any enemies within the blast radius would get the effects.
B) Use some sort of waypoint system to determine the exact coordinates you wanted to throw to (provided they are within range). Of course we do already have a waypoint system, but I don't think that would work for this, as it would be far to cumbersome for combat, and by the time you created the waypoint, the person would probably have moved.
Not as neat as throwing it around a corner, but I don't think that could be managed anyways. This way, you could throw it to the side of an obstacle where your enemy is hidden from you, and hopefully catch them in the blast.
Now this is all just a crude idea here, so if you see any glaring problems with it or don't like it or think it would be completely impossible to program, lets here the criticism (provided its constructive). Thoughts? Garvin? Fellow Commandos?
(*Note: All this is based on the assumption that the horrible problems with that exist with grenades, such as the HAM cost and self-damaging properties, will be fixed.)

While indirect fire is interesting, I don't think it would fit in with combat system in place in SWG. Currently you click the enemy, and attack. The shots themselves are simply graphical effects, they don't need to be synchronized on the clients.
With indirect fire, you'd have to introduce a lot of new stuff into the system, clients would need to know the details about the grenade, rather than just hit or miss.
Might also be balance problems with em. Sitting behind a rock, tossing grenades at defenseless turrets, or trapped creatures.
While it's very cool and all, it just doesn't fit in with the system in SWG if you ask me.

The wp system could work, if when you threw a grenade it just targeted the wp of whatever you have targeted. Unfortunately you could not "lead: a target with this system. I do like the idea of attacking an area with a grenade rather then a target person or animal. It would also be nice if you could throw grenades into structures to flush an enemy out, but I guess that would be considered overpowered.
