Thread: Innate AOE controversy

It seems to be a split from what I've read between people who just want single target weapons and AOE specials and ones that enjoy the current innate AOE setup and just want our area damage fixed. So here's a post to discuss the point of view and fixes/adjustments/possible specials.



Me? I prefer the current AOE setup. I'm usually the tank anyways and when someone need to be combat free I can pull out a flamer or blackscale and get the rooms attention. States over an area couldn't be accomplished as efficiently as we do now (as our imfamous smuggler/Commando hybrids can well infrom us of) as well as a potential for some major area damage should a modifier such as Improved Leg Shot is spread over the entirety of our cone/splash. BUT....there are times when the pure burn of a flamethrower is needed on a single target so heres a plausible idea for single target needs. instead of nixing the AOE all together and getting AOE specials, keep the AOE but gives us single target specials with large modifiers (useable only with heavy weapons of course). Say a Focused Spray Shot special similar to Sniper shot and maybe a new ranged shot equivalent at novice commando.In this way we can keep the versitilty of ourAOE but have the ability to tone down the AOE when needed. It could also be used to boost our damage level back up to were its sposedly claimed at. Food for thought.

Well...its not really a controversy...might be too strong of a word.

But, I'm in the middle of the road regarding this...we can't have too much AoE, rather we need a balance between AoE and front-loaded. Having some weapons AoE (especially short ranged ones since their AoE % will be much more than a weapon with 64 m range, and AoE) will really add something unique (and has) to the profession. We just need it to be more thought out, balanced, and expanded.

Having seen innate AoE work properly in other games and also when I have seen it work properly on the rare occasions where it actually is working, there is certainly no better way to do mass damage since even with high SAC you can lay out the damage to a large group of people for a very long time by alternatinv between high and low SAC attacks. My greatest desire right now is to see a group of 8 commandos with working AoE take on a tightly clustered group of opposing PCs with one of the 100% AoE weapons because I'm certain that they will be doing 1000-3000 per volley to everyone in the radius.

It would definately be nice though if the non AoE weapons had SACs more in line with rifles/carbines/pistols though since they give up a great deal of their ability.

As a side note though, when I was breifly trying SL/Commando I had amazing luck with using just the rocket launcher for crowd control (basicly controlling the flow of the battle until all of their riflemen focused on me).
