I have had a SL and Carbineer Template for awhile and the SL is said to be a waste of skillpoints and the Carbineer is fine, but I have been thinking of going Commando and Swordsman...is this a good combo? I am looking for mainly PvE but if needs be I want to be able to my ground in PvP as well, I am not too concentrated on PvP on the ground, more so in space.

Swordsman is pretty sweet because of the Blast damage and being able to target mind pretty effectively, however having Unarmed 4 as a prereq for Commando puts a damper on taking other melee classes because you are 6 points away from TKA as a commando, and 20 points away from any other melee class.

Swordsman toughness and melee mitagation are great for close combat, especially if you have an uber hammer.

I've been swords/commando for a while, and I do enjoy it. Swordsman lets me stay alive, whereas commando I just get my butt kicked

The only problem with the template is you have no spare skill points for anything like... say... novice medic

So from what I am hearing, I should just not go Commando because swordsman would be better?

You could go 0040 commando with Master Swordsman. Then you got a ton of options to add, like feigndeath, TKA defenses, medic, etc.

I normally don't like to encourage dabbling... but truth be told, 3/4 of our branches don't do much.

tk/commando.

of the big mobs commando outdamage all but jedi....on a live event on tempest a spiderclan elder (320k ham) spawned...over a dozen people were hitting it (most of them grouped), but I outdamaged em solo and got loot rights

And don't underestimate the power or you consumables on mid level mobs!
