I just finished mastering bounty hunter and commando 2 days ago. I am really starting to wonder what the point of commando is. The best pft I could find on my server (starsider) was a 280.9 base dps. The estimated damage comes out to 450. I also have a proton carbine I can use... this things damage, with NO carbine skills at all comes out ro 435. I am starting to think maybe drop commando and get master carbineer instead if a weapon with 0 skill can do 5 more damage than a maxed out skill weapon.
Or maybe I should still buy a proton rifle. Will that get my dps up some? I just find our master weapon such a pice of crap for anything other than sticking states on multiple targets at once, but when the target is a jedi it donest really matter.
Help anyone?

You in a guild? If not, then Joken Jash(sp?) has a commando guild on starsider.

No guild yet. Are these commando guilds or smuggler guilds just groups of people that have the same profession to help eachother out?

The problem of DPS, it shouldnt be the sole thing that matters. Its nice to measure a weapon quickly, but SAC and max damage are also very important too!
For example, my old PFT was 311 dps...usually had hit for about 1800 dmg (was 930 or so max dmg, 2.54 speed). It could dole out improved legshot for that damage every 3 seconds. My new krayt enhanced PFT is a bit less than 200 damage more, less SAC, but 2.83 speed. The DPS on that is 309.85 (max dmg is around 1113). And now Im getting around 2.2k dmg with improved legshot, for around 3 seconds again. The speed in the end is only a small difference, but Im getting more power because the SAC's lower and the max damage is higher.
Anyways, thats the one place where proton rifle beats the proton carbine over...our rifle has 700+ max dmg where as the carbine has 500+ damage. That means we'll be hitting harder with it. The unfortunate side is the DPS and SAC. My proton rifle (when I finally can get mine, 4 raids...no proton rifle so far), will do good damage at 64 meters, hopefully non-AoE, and will do more damage than the carbine. In the end it *may* be a bit slower (like being able to dole out improved legshot in 4 or 5 second rathers than 3...in the CU Beta it was 4 seconds when I tested our weapons out), and the SAC is much higher...on these two points it'll really hurt. But don't just look at the DPS

Does that mean that a weapon delay of 1 is not two times as fast as a delay of 2?
DPS is damage per second, or average damage / time. And if all the specials, like advanced crit shot do is add a multiplier to the damage, the dps should still be an accurate damage gauge, unless weapon speed is not linear.
The only other thing then would be SAC.
So DPS and SAC are what determine your damage? Can someone explain the math here about ignoring the speed and only using max damage and sac?

No im saying dont just look at one singular stat, such as DPS. All the stats (speed, damage [DPS], SAC) plays an important role.
Remember, a weapon could have like 900 damage but 2.8 speed and have the same DPS as a weapon that has 700 damage but 2.0 speed. The first weapon will hit harder than the second weapon, but have around the same DPS (just throwing up numbers here). Plus SAC comes into play too, you may have a uber DPS weapon but horrible action cost...
If that lower damage weapon has higher SAC, it may not be worthwhile to have compared to the more damaging one...as you wont get enough shots off to come up to par with the damaging one.

To say what Stern is saying, but in a different way:
A weapon with a lower sac allows you to use more specials before you have to sit around and let your action recharge. Since dps is calculated by averaging the damage on a weapon (min dam + max dam / 2) and dividing that by the weapons rate of fire, a simple boost to damage ( a special) increases your dps but that isn't shown in the weapon description. A weapon with a lower sac allows you to increase your dps for longer which can give you a greater damage output then a weapon with higher sac.
However, while that's a good thing to realise, it is dependent on fights lasting a long time which they don't unless you're fighting something like necrosis. In pvp, people die really fast so it doesn't really matter. Pick your weapon based on the purpose you need it for. Pvp: speed is the key. Pve: sac and high damage are key.
