The idea that I'll never use anything but heavy weapons seems a little...................boring. I'd like to use actual guns as well. At first I was going to become a BH/commando for the LLC and scatter pistol but I don't want to pour so many skill points into scout despite the fact that BH is supposedly the best duel profession. I'll probably pick up TKA's defense mods but I'd rather not get the offensive stuff since the flamethrower can cover my melee fighting. I need some range. What combat profession would be best?

IMHO there is no best combat addition to commando. You take a ton of trade-offs no matter what. My opinions looking at the combat aspect rather than special skills (ie Slicing and CH) in no particular order:

1. Pistoleer complements our ability to use a commando weapon other than the flamethrower (LP may get it's own tree in future however).

2. Bounty Hunter and Smuggler give added abilities that once again complement our LP (incl knockdown).

3. Carbiner can give knockdown and an extra bleed line along with AP1 in a standard weapon.

4. Rifleman gives a very good, difficult to heal bleed along with AP2, and ranged bonuses which complement our "heavy" role.

5. Tera Kasi gives excellent melee defence (possibly broken?).

As far as I can tell, those are the combat elite professions you can easily follow. Your next question should probably be if you want to go down straight combat professions, or look into a support elite profession to have some more utility. Many people like CH, but it eats up a ton of skill points in the scout profession and then to have decent pets, alot in the CH tree. There are a ton of threads about what to add that is not combat related, and I see them as all being personal preference.
