So I was running around Corellia the other day taking Rebel missions out of Tyrena, happily toasting stormtroopers left and right, when I had the beggings of a thought on how to make faction rank actually mean something.
I don't know how easy this would even be to code into the game, but.... what if, with each progressive rank within a faction, you were given a bonus to accuracy, applied across any weapon you have a cert for.
I'm not talking about huge bonuses here, say maybe +2 per rank or something - but it always struck me as kinda odd that (for example) there is nothing to differentiate a general from a private on the field of battle, and with this system, by the time you got to the final rank (which would take a decent chunk of time) you'd be looking at something in the region of a +40 to +50 accuracy bonus.
I realise that this would benefit more than just commandos, but as a commando I'm always looking for ways to improve our accuracy, and as a rebel thought this would also finally give me some reason to accumulate faction points.
Anyhow, what do you all think ?

I recently read that faction rank and/or points will have an impact as to the types of ships that one will be able to fly when the expansion comes out. I think that's a very good idea as it gives us a motivation to move up in faction ranks.
I like your idea about gaining additional skills but the Devs may become worried about how it will affect the balance of the game. Ok ok, the balance is screwed up right now especially with the Jedi's (who I think are too numerous) out there but it's the idea that counts here, hehe.
My idea has more to do with gaining special weapons (special grenades, guns, etc) apart from the Marine/Stormtrooper Armorthat you can get. It should involve rank and/or faction points. Perhaps assault vehicles, could be introduced to a game that only a (for example) commissioned officer (rank of 2nd Lieutenant or above) can get, etc., etc.
I like this thread because I believe that the Devs really need to give us more incentives for moving up thefaction chain of command.

It would be nice for my faction rank to actually mean something ather than getting away from scans and being able to slap stormtroopes.

How bout getting cheaper faction equipment, cheaper weapons etc as a high ranking officer?
Even cheaper faction bases and defences. Hell yes! Don't ye all just love taking them down, and killing the base defences?
Well cheaper means more of them, means more takedown fun eh?

It doesn't help that I can't remember how many faction ranks there actually are, or what the fp requirement for each rank is
(although I do remember someone posting them once), but I had other ideas that the devs probably could implement, but was unsure as to how unbalancing they'd be.
Ability to call more factional "pets" : I mean the standard grunts only here, your run of the mill rebel or imperial troopers etc, not AT-ST's... but a general is supposed to command an army right ?, yet a general in the GCW can only call and command one trooper, which seems kinda disappointing. Now imagine that with every few ranks, you could call an additional trooper (if we run with an estimate of 25 total ranks, let's suggest you can call an extra trooper every five ranks; so you get 1 at starting rank, 2 at your fifth rank, 3 at your tenth etc etc)
Access to more powerful "pets" : Same principle as above, you get to rank X and suddenly have access to a wider range of troopers, with the newest available troopers having higher HAM, or damage etc.
Schematics for factional weapons : The devs seem very capable of adding new weapons for certain profs, so how about we add some non-tradeable factional weapon schematics at the higher ranks ?
I'm sure some of these would unbalance certain aspects (especially if they were all implemented), but seriously, if you're a high ranking officer shouldnt you have some kind of advantage derived from that ? Whereas currently there is no reason to achieve higher ranks, this would provide some incentive (I mean I've been playing since August 03 and I'm still only a Major, and I've only gone that high because of the possibility that higher ranking officer will get access to better factional ships in JTL)
Anyway, more ideas, feedback, flaws, improvements.. keep em coming, lets see if we can get the Devs to pay some attention

I have heard that faction ranks are going to be important in JTL. Of course this is rumor so take what you want from it.

An alternative would be to increase your skills based on the amount of time you stay in that prefession, but I like the idea of using Faction Points.

I really like the idea of gaining extra benefits the longer you stay in a class. If fact it's something I've been thinking about for quite a while. What sort of benefits would be good? Any idea's? Perhaps a Class Verteran Badge, the ability to "tweak" our weapons, something would be nice to see. It'll help keep people from getting bord and start grinding every profession, not that I mind, but it will add a bit more to the game.

Adding extra skills for veteran class holders would be nice. They could make it a seperate skill set just like they are supposed to do with the force skills. They could do the same thing for factional bonuses. They could be completely seperate from any other skill points or xp.
